Evonik is celebrating Black History Month with a focus on science and art. The Employee Resource Group BUILD commissioned a painting to feature Black science pioneers, including Evonik’s senior R&D scientist Darryl Love. Created by New Orleans-based artist Kenneth Scott Jr, the painting “Black Resilience – Innovation in the Midst of Resistance” pays tribute to trailblazers like Marie Maynard Daly, the first African-American women to gain a PhD in chemistry. Love is portrayed next to legends like Percy Julian and George Washington Carver who inspired him to pursue chemistry.

“The inclusion of one of our own legends in the painting was dear to our hearts,” shares Tracy Cheavious, BUILD vice-chair, who spearheaded the project. The painting will be permanently displayed at Evonik’s Birmingham, Ala., site after touring several Evonik locations across North America.
