ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER

Louis Sahuc is a freelance photographer and French Quarter preservationist, living and working on Jackson Square. Louis fell in love with New Orleans as a young boy riding around the city with his father in the 1940s and 50s. After college and a brief stint in retail and sales management he found what he really wanted to do: photography. Since 1972 Louis has been making awa

rd-winning photographs for advertising, fashion, architecture, corporate, editorial and private clients, but between commercial assignments his main focus has been to share his own vision of the place he loves and the world he’d like to see. “I’ve always liked the idea of communicating with images”, he says. In the summer of 1995 Louis opened PHOTO WORKS and began showing an on-going body of work that preserves the architecture and uniqueness of life in New Orleans’ French Quarter. These photographs are timeless visual vignettes that evoke feelings of what it is like to live in this special place as it is now, was in the past, and will be in the future. Louis’ work gives us just enough visual information to make our mind react and declare: this is the true New Orleans. With tight composition, selective focus, and a strong sense of design, along with rich natural lighting and deep shadows, the viewer is drawn to that which attracted Louis to photography in the first place.

The timing of Louis' photograph Arcade was impeccable; he waited for the right season, the right day, the right hour and minute before clicking the shutter. The image before him finally manifested as only previously imagined in his head- this is typical of Louis' work; in part only possible because of Louis' intimate knowledge of his subject, in part because his imagination saw things first as he hoped they might become.

Sometimes you have to bring in the big guns... 'Attitude', Louis' classic "Hopper being Hopper" image, photographed on the set of Doublecrossed. (The infamous Barry Seal story, later remade by Tom Cruise.) This print is a showstopper at the gallery; I swear men can see it from a block away whether the doors are open or not.
Although the highly coveted signed prints are long gone, I do have archival Estate Editions (with an expected 200+ year print life expectancy).

Well, hello there... a striking image Louis composed and shot in 1984-85. I like to compare this particular piece to Hemmingway's approach-beyond the elegance and minimalism of a clean line, a story builds.

I took a melancholy walk around Jackson Square last night, noting Louis' balcony is still completely dark and empty. Two years have gone by in a flash since his death, and it still appears the museum is in no hurry to bring life back into the Pontalba residences. There are apartments that have been empty now for years... If Louis knows, I suspect he's spitting mad about it. It's a rough month around here- it's already two years ago in mid-August that he passed away. So many of his friends reached out in the months, weeks and days preceding his death- I'll never stop being grateful for the help so many of you provided, and the comfort you gave him, particularly in the last few days. We learned recently of Jimmy Buffet's death- he was a great peer of Louis'. I'm reminded me of this album cover Lous shot for Jimmy. There are hundreds of slides shot of Jimmy by Louis- hopefully they will one day be made public. More importantly, I hope the two of them and a certain Galatoire are sharing a great laugh together somewhere right now.

Well, here's a print you are likely unfamiliar with... among Louis' many hundreds of images he brought into the gallery over the years, there are a handful that make me wonder what the heck he was thinking.
I won't say anything here that I wouldn't say directly to Louis, but I wish I'd had a word with him about this print, one of the tens of thousands of times we spoke.
However, if it's exactly your thing, I'd love to help you acquire it!

Jason Marsalis playing 'My Baby Smiles on Me' on WWOZ, a dark and heavy sky breaking into rain- it's wonderfully moody in the French Quarter this morning: perfect, as far as I'm concerned.

'Royal St. Grocery', from St. Ann and Royal St.- See that fan window in the distance? It can be observed from the inside in another of Louis' compositions, 'The Red Chair'.
More of Louis' work can be found online at www.louissahuc.com or in person at 317 Exchange Place, only ever in the French Quarter.
