Today, September 1, marks the birthday of Edgar Stern Jr., oldest son of Longue Vue founders Edith and Edgar. Like his father, Edgar Stern Jr. (1922 - 2008) focused his adult years on business, and in 1948, after serving in the Army during WWII, he and Edgar Sr. started WDSU-TV from a preexisting radio station. This was the first commercial television station in Louisiana and the Gulf Coast region and would set a precedent—at the time groundbreaking, now a norm—of broadcasting coverage of events as they occurred.

Edgar Jr. would also go on to develop the Royal Orleans Hotel, the Royal Sonesta, and the Oakwood Shopping Mall, the first air-conditioned shopping center in the Gulf Coast region. He served as a campaign vice chairman for the United Community Funds and Councils of America, as chairman of the Aspen Music Festival & School, and on the boards of the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Tulane University, and the University of Chicago.

The fall season of Twilight at Longue Vue kicks off next week with Dusky Waters! Bring a chair or a blanket and settle in the beauty of our historic gardens for an evening of live, local music on Wednesday, September 9, 5:00PM.

Dusky Waters is the nom de plume of Jenn Jeffers, a contemporary Americana songwriter and musician whose work bridges the rich musical traditions of the South with a modern, genre-defying sound. As the executive director and co-founder of BlackAmericana Fest, she is at the forefront of fostering a more inclusive roots music landscape. Her evocative songwriting and compelling performances have earned critical acclaim, with audiences lauding her ability to craft deeply personal yet universally resonant songs. Reimagining Americana, her music honors tradition while forging a new path that reflects the magic, mourning, and ever-evolving spirit of the South.
