Featured in “Louisiana Contemporary,” presented by The Helis Foundation, is Adam Newman’s “Mostly Temporary and Cloudy.”

Newman explains, “The piece reveals a desire for normalcy, security and comfort in modern America, where, for most, only the idea of it may exist. A home has been reduced to a propped-up section of drywall with rectangular cutouts as windows. A newspaper describing ongoing genocide labeled as ‘war’ hangs out the front window. A mirage of luxury appears as a leather chair, cracked with age, behind the partition. A lamp and orange extension cord lead to a temporary power supply, symbolic of a frugal amount of hope. A flimsy landscape fence suggests the idea of security, as a coffee cup bearing the BlackRock logo mocks any dream that might have been held within, American or otherwise.”

You can view Newman’s work in “Louisiana Contemporary,” presented by The Helis Foundation, through February 14, 2027.

From cardboard and house paint to pieces of cut tin, Betty Sue Matthews found creative possibilities in the materials around her.

A self-taught artist from Brundidge, Alabama, Matthews began drawing from memory as a child, tracing images into the dirt with a stick. She later painted on discarded cardboard using house paint, mud and grass before moving on to pieces of cut tin, which she shaped with an axe and clippers, all before she had access to more traditional mediums.

Matthews is best known for her playful, stylized paintings of people from everyday life and expressive depictions of animals. She described her subjects as “fat babies, gentlemen, ladies and little bitties” and initially sold her paintings directly from her home for just two dollars each. As her career and artistic practice developed, Matthews gained recognition across the region, including exhibitions at the Kentuck Festival of the Arts and Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts.

Discover the work of Betty Sue Matthews in “The Dream is the Truth,” now on view at Ogden Museum.

The highlight of the event was the panel discussion moderated by Dillard University student and Ogden Museum HBCU Intern Kennedy Timmons, featuring Kristina “Kota” Leatherman, Dillion Stuart, Sydnei Heisser and Ronnesha Ewing. Thank you to our panelists and everyone who joined us for such a successful celebration of the next generation of artists.
