Today, the Helis Foundation John Scott Center hosted Word & Image: A Poetry Collage Workshop at the Contemporary Arts Center, exploring the intersection of poetry and visual art. The workshop reflected John T. Scott’s innovative collage practice, inviting participants to layer words and images to tell their own stories.

Special thanks to Dr. Callie Smith of the LSU Museum of Art for facilitating this creative experience and helping us continue to Pass It On!

Now open at the Louisiana Children's Museum! Take the family Beyond Our Walls with The Helis Foundation John Scott Center. The exhibition invites children to look inside his work, use their imagination, and contemplate how they can carry out Scott's mission of passing it on.

The installation is made possible by The Helis Foundation and supported by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Louisiana Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council, as administered by Arts New Orleans. Funding has also been provided by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Writing a poem is a lot like making a collage: image by image, words come together to express something that's hard to say directly. Instead of keeping them separate, what happens when the textures and colors of visual imagery and language are brought together?

In this workshop, participants will be guided through engaging poetry and collage as a united creative practice. No experience is necessary, just curiosity. Everyone leaves with an original collage poem that they've brought to life.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Family Folk Life Day at the Louisiana Children’s Museum and shared in a special afternoon with Mrs. Anna Rita Scott and Mr. Ayo Scott as they read passages from Passing It On: The Art of John Scott and shared stories of John Scott’s journey as an artist, educator, and family man.

A special thank you to the Louisiana Children’s Museum for this meaningful partnership. We’re excited to have works from our Beyond Our Walls exhibition installed at the Museum, bringing John Scott’s legacy to families and a new generation.

Join us on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in the atrium at the Louisiana Children's Museum for a book talk with Anna Rita Scott, co-author of "Passing It On: The Art of John Scott." Mrs. Scott will be reading excerpts from the book and sharing with guests about the life, work, and legacy of her husband, renowned artist John T. Scott.

The program is designed to be family friendly. The reading and conversation will provide an accessible way for younger audiences to learn about John Scott, his art, and the importance of passing stories, creativity, and cultural traditions from one generation to the next.
