Note: In this image, Depp captures a vibrant “Moonrise” over Lake Pontchartrain. “Lake” is a misnomer for this body of water as it actually serves as an estuary connected to the Gulf. It also serves as a northern boundary to the city of New Orleans and provides a source of recreation for locals as well as a home to a number of fish & wildlife. Flying above the Lake’s surface, Depp was able to capture a rare moment of stillness in an otherwise very active body of water.

Depp is an artist and National Geographic Explorer based in New Orleans. For over a decade, he has been flying on a powered paraglider, camera in tow, to capture the beauty and complexity of the environment both throughout Louisiana and along the Gulf Coast. Depp is the recipient of the Documentary Photographer of the Year Award from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities (2024) and the Cohn | Greater New Orleans Foundation Arts Award (2026). He has exhibited his work at the Historic New Orleans Collection, the Louisiana State Museum, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the Pensacola Museum of Art, and the Walter Anderson Museum of Art.

Installation Inspiration: Ashton Shaw Despot’s “Jump In, Drift On” hung in a beautiful dining room designed by Whitney Wilkinson Design Studio with photography by Laura Steffan and styling by Suzonne Stirling.

Note: Growing up in Louisiana, Despot spent her summers out on the water — especially, early mornings when heat and humidity linger and the surface rests like glass. In these moments, trees, sky, and light dissolve into reflection, and time feels suspended between movement and stillness. Water becomes both subject and structure—a life-giving presence that mirrors the landscape while anchoring it. Despot is drawn to this quiet pause, where the world feels expansive yet intimate, and the water offers a sense of grounding, restoration, and continuity.

Note: Ashleigh Coleman is a photographer living and working in Mississippi. In 2020, she won the Mississippi State Fellow Prize from South Arts and in 2022, she received the photography award from the Mississippi Institute of Arts & Letters.

Much of her work deals with themes of motherhood and the surprising situations she finds herself and her children in while living in & exploring near their home.

In her own words:
“Children hold nothing back — living somewhat feral days as they zigzag from one curiosity to the next. Daily life, for them and with them, is intensely mundane and also overflowing with fierce wonder.”

In the photo above, Coleman captured her eldest daughter as she was painting fresh blooms of Springtime azaleas with “paint” made out of clay.

Coleman has exhibited her work in New Orleans, Atlanta, Memphis, throughout Mississippi, and beyond.  Her work has been published in Smithsonian Magazine, the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Travel + Leisure, Elle Decor, Southern Living, Oxford American, and numerous other outlets. Her work is also in the permanent collection of the Mississippi Museum of Art and The Do Good Fund, as well as countless private collections.

Note: Marcy Palmer is an artist and educator living and working in Dallas, TX. She received a BFA from Skidmore College and MFA from the School of Visual Arts (NY).

“At Once” is part of Palmer’s “You Are Eternity” series. She explains the motivation for this series as follows:

“This project is an exploration of beauty as an antidote for personal and political crisis. In times of heartache, disaster, impasse, many turn to the idea of beauty in the natural world as a place of refuge. The idea that beauty is a necessary part of our lives; that it “ennobles the heart and reminds us of the infinity that is within us” (John O’Donohue) inspired the project.”

To create this work, Palmer photographed botanicals (peonies and leaves) which she then printed onto a sheet of vellum and hand gilded with 24k gold. The work is then sealed with a UV varnish and wax for protection. “At Once” is the title image for Palmer’s photography book “You Are Eternity, You Are the Mirror” which was published in 2020 by Yoffy Press and and recognized as a Photo-Eye 2020 favorite photobook, The Luupe’s Favorite Woman-Made Books of the Year, and Deep Red Press’s Favorite Photobooks.

Palmer has exhibited this body of work at The Griffin Museum of Photography, The Ogden Museum of Southern Art, and The Center for Photographic Art. We are honored to be the first gallery to exhibit this body of work by Marcy Palmer as part of the PhotoNOLA Festival in 2018. We have worked with Marcy since 2017.

Note: Rosemary Goodell is an artist based in Baton Rouge, LA. While she takes inspiration from the vibrancy of Louisiana, she also counts Japanese art as a strong influence on her work.

Goodell’s monotypes incorporate shapes of her own making. These shapes are often inspired by nature - leaves, grass, butterflies - and are made from recycled materials that she cuts by hand. She then “inks” each shape with color - placing them carefully on a plate that is run through a paper press in her studio.

The title of this work “Jazz” carries a double meaning - it’s both a reference to “Jazz” music and a homage to Henri Matisse, who created his seminal artist’s book “Jazz” from vibrant cut-paper collages (pochoirs) during wartime in the South of France. At the time, Matisse was in poor health, but his “scissor work” allowed him to continue to create during a time when creation was a means of “survival”. Goodell’s work mirrors Matisse’s in that she was also in recovery from a life-threatening accident while creating this print. If you look closely, you may notice “butterflies” flying through the composition, which Goodell uses both as a symbol of resilience and recovery. This print, vibrant in color and movement, is a reminder that art is never created in a vacuum. It’s a reflection of personal experiences, stories, real-life influences, and at times, a reflection of the past.

Note: Emery Gluck received a BFA from Tulane University. In her work, she explores the ways multi-layered memories shape our dreams, motivations, and desires. Her goal is to make work that feels proximate, there to touch the viewer, but also distant and enigmatic.

In 2018, Gluck completed an Early Art Practitioners Residency at the Joan Mitchell Center and in 2021, she completed an Artist Residency at PADA Studios in Lisbon, Portugal. She received a Sandy Chism Memorial Award in Painting (2018) and the Juror’s Award for the exhibition, “30 New Orleans Artists” (2018). Her work can be found in a number of private collections both locally and throughout the US as well as the corporate collection of a Fortune 500 company based in Louisiana. We have worked with Emery since 2018.
