We came across this Woldemar Neufeld oil painting (16x20) and thought we should wish all the Moms a belated Mother's Day given that the tile is literally "Mother's Day."

Gregory James Gallery has a group of oil paintings by Neufeld, who was primarily known for his watercolors and linoleum block prints of the East River and the Litchfield Hills and rarely painted in oils. The late artist moved from New York City to New Preston Hill in the late 1940s and died in 2002.

The gallery's small collection of oil paintings includes views of the East River, skating in Central Park, a Rhode Island seaside scene, and boats in Mystic Harbor

These works join the gallery’s large collection of watercolors and linoleum block prints of New Preston and Washington Depot, as well as New Milford, Kent, Litchfield, and beyond – including midcentury New York City and the Watch Hill, R.I., area, where Neufeld vacationed with his family.

In addition to the original, hand-signed artwork, Gregory James Gallery also offers a collection of less expensive Neufeld giclee prints.

Visit the gallery at 149 Park Lane Road (Rte. 202) in New Milford to see the full selection of Neufeld works, and head to the artist’s bio page for a sampling of the available works, as well as reading his fascinating story.

The late artist Ralph Della-Volpe’s figure paintings from the early-to-mid 1960s not only represent a distinct pivot point but they are viewed as his most historically significant works – and Gregory James Gallery just acquired four of these works directly from the artist’s daughter.

Shown here is “Arms Up,” (14x12).

While Della-Volpe’s later landscapes and beach scenes are known for their serenity, these 1960s figurative works are characterized by a Fauvist intensity with bold, arbitrary colors and a focus on psychological mood rather than literal representation.

These paintings have a brooding or enigmatic quality. Influenced by the energy of mid-century Modernism, Della-Volpe was trying to capture a feeling rather than a likeness – and they bridge the gap between the somber, dark-toned realism he produced after WWII and the light-drenched semi-abstractions of his later life.

Della-Volpe, who lived in Millbrook, N.Y., served in the Army during World War II and saw action on Utah Beach during the European invasion. He was wounded twice and received the Purple Heart. Later he would serve as head of the art department at Bennett College for nearly 30 years, and he painted until his death at age 94 in 2017.

Visit the gallery at 149 Park Lane Road (Rt 202), in New Milford to see the Della-Volpe paintings or call gallery owner Greg Mullen for details and pricing at 860-354-3436. Stop by Gregory James Gallery to see a new selection of paintings by Christopher Magadini.

Magadini’s style could be called Contemporary Impressionism although the pastoral quality of his work recalls the naturalism of 19th century American Landscape Painting. An incredible technician, Magadini is a skilled painter who has synthesized characteristics of these movements—and has even drawn from abstraction—to create his own style where the power of nature to stir the human spirit becomes paramount.

Magadini has taught at College in Tarrytown, N.Y., and has been a guest lecturer at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. He lives in Great Barrington, Mass., and summers in the Adirondacks. Learn more about the artist here: https://gregoryjamesgallery.com/artist/christopher-m-magadini/

It's great to have new paintings by award-winning landscape painter Jim Laurino of Litchfield at Gregory James Gallery.

His many awards and honors include an Award of Merit in the “Ship to Shore” exhibit at the Lyme Art Association, where he often exhibits, the Artists Choice award and a 2nd place prize at the Gloucester Arts Festival in Gloucester, VA, the Best Marine Painting award at the Plein Air Easton Competition and Arts Festival in Easton, MD, and 1st Place at the Adirondack Plein Air Festival in Saranac Lake, N.Y.

He also won the Best Body of Work award in the 2025 Plein Air Litchfield painting festival, which earns an automatic invitation for this year's event from Sept. 12 to 20.

Laurino, who studied painting, design, and color theory at the University of Connecticut, has cultivated a bold representational painting style that balances the Impressionists’ influence with contemporary subject matter. The artist's website is http://www.jimlaurino.com

Woldemar Neufeld's "Festival of Lights on the Green" captures the holiday charm of the New Milford Green from an earlier era.

The linoleum block print (linocut) is one of many original hand-signed linocuts available at the gallery by the late artist who was born in 1909 in Russia, emigrated to Ontario, Canada, in 1924, moved to New York City in the mid-1940s and came to New Milford in 1949.

Gregory James Gallery has original Neufeld linocuts of iconic scenes in New Milford, Washington, New Preston, Kent, and around Lake Waramaug, as well as New York City from the 1950s through the late 20th century -- and any/all of them make perfect holiday gifts for the art lovers on your list.

Tapping into the artist's estate, we also have watercolors and oil paintings of Northwest Connecticut, and watercolors of Watch Hill, Rhode Island, and other summer havens in South County.

Visit the gallery at 149 Park Lane Road (Rte. 202) in New Milford to see the full selection of Neufeld works, or contact gallery owner Greg Mullen at 860-354-3436, or by email at [email protected], for details and pricing of works you see on the website.

Winter's arrival adds the perfect (if freezing) vibe to the holiday shopping season and the masterful winter landscape paintings in our current exhibit of new works by Thomas Adkins merit a visit to Gregory James Gallery -- and maybe a place under the tree for the art lover on your gift list.

If winter gives you the chills, Adkins has the answer for that. Considered one of the finest landscape artists in the Northeast, he favors all seasons and the 30 paintings in the show exude the magical qualities of light, atmosphere, and landscape in Northwest Connecticut, Vermont, Maine and Monhegan Island, South Carolina, and even Montana.

The exhibit remains on view through Jan. 31. Stop by just to see and appreciate it, or also for some holiday shopping. In addition to paintings by noted artists, the gallery has lots of original prints, including a trove of linocuts by the late Woldemar Neufeld of iconic scenes in Litchfield County, midcentury New York City, and more.

Southbury landscape artist Thomas Adkins is having a solo exhibit of new works entitled “Chasing the Light” at Gregory James Gallery from Nov. 15 through Jan. 31, 2026.

The exhibit opens with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15, at the gallery located at 149 Park Lane Rd. (Route 202).

“As always, lighting is the key feature in my work,” said Adkins, known for his mastery in capturing the fleeting effects of light and atmosphere on rural and coastal landscapes. “Hence the title ‘Chasing the Light’ … to evoke a strong sense of place by recording the atmospheric conditions of each location at a particular time on a particular day.”

That sense of place extends from Southbury and elsewhere in Northwest Connecticut to Vermont, Maine and Monhegan Island, South Carolina, and Montana.

Art of the West Magazine featured a story about Gregory James Gallery artist Bill Rice of Warren in its September/October issue that opens with the line, “As long as there are birds in the skies, Bill Rice will sculpt them.”
The artist also creates highly realistic sculptures of bird feathers, and the gallery currently has six of his feather sculptures, four of which are triptychs.

“Rice enjoys getting super specific with the feather details that are particular to the bird he is portraying,” Art of the West said of Rice, whose recent awards include the 2024 People’s Choice Award at the Adirondack Experience Museum in Blue Mountain, N.Y.

Bill Rice has been carving and painting avian subjects for more than 40 years, bringing the freedom of flight indoors for collectors and creating a sense of wonder through dynamic renditions of birds in which he captures their beauty, personality, and even spiritual essence, with fine craftsmanship and attention to detail.

“These are the aspects of nature that have been practically the center of my life for as long as I can remember,” he says on his website. “That combined with a love of working with wood and the oil paint mediums have been a combination seemingly made for each other. Each piece is unique, each piece has the benefit of what is now over 40 years of carving & painting experience.”

Born in 1952, he is a self-taught artist who began painting as a teenager and began sculpting avian subjects while working as a carpenter. His devotion to observing the habits and activities of birds inspires the artist’s finely crafted bird sculptures. Rice’s work has been featured in many national wildlife exhibits and is in the permanent collections of the Ward Foundation Museum of Wildfowl Art and the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, as well as private and corporate collections throughout the U.S. and beyond.

Visit the gallery at 149 Park Lane Road (Rte. 202) in New Milford to see Bill Rice’s feather sculptures, or contact gallery owner Greg Mullen at 860-354-3436, or by email at [email protected], for details and pricing of works.

Wollman Rink NYC, the historic public ice-skating rink located in the southern part of Central Park, has been featured in many popular films, including Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, and Night at the Museum.

Gregory James Gallery recently acquired a 30-by-60 inch oil-on-canvas painting of Wollman Rink by Woldemar Neufeld from the late artist’s estate. It’s circa 1960, which means it portrays the iconic rink with fabulous views of the New York City skyline in its early heyday. (The gallery also has Neufeld’s watercolor study of Wollman Rink.)

The rink, on the east side of Central Park, near the 63rd Street entrance, was built in 1950 with a donation of $600,000 from philanthropist Kate Wollman. It fell into disrepair and was closed in the 1980s, before being renovated and reopened in 1986. Now operated by Wollman Park Partners, the rink not only hosts ice skating in colder months but also sports like pickleball in warmer months and movie and theater nights.

Gregory James Gallery has an extensive collection of original hand-signed Neufeld linocuts from the 1950s through the late 20th century of New Preston, Kent, Washington, New Milford, and New York City, as well as watercolors of Lake Waramaug and Northwest Connecticut, New York, and Watch Hill and Westerly, R.I., and a small collection of oil paintings.
