The Firelands Genealogical Society in Norwalk will be having its big America250 event on Saturday, September 26th, 3-7 pm at the corner of Case Ave and Monroe Streets, and the New London Area Historical Society will be there with a sales table. In fact, many other historically-minded groups from Huron and Erie counties will be there with tables and will be selling their books and other merchandise. More activity announcements are to come as we all help support Firelands history. Please mark this date on your calendar.

This is image #3 from our collection of glass plate negatives of New London businesses in 1910. We unfortunately have to figure each one of these out from scratch.

This is No. 2 of those New London interior business glass plate negatives taken in 1910. Keep in mind that no one living has personal knowledge unless we have a labeled photo of the same image. For identification, we have to rely on educated guesses from the New London Record online, the 1910 census online, the 1908 New London village directory, the Sanborn insurance maps online, and things like that. Several people guessed Lehman's Bakery for the last shot, but they were not in town yet. I guessed Moore's Bakery where the phone company is. They were in town in 1910 but not at that location. There were two, maybe three bakeries in 1910. We might have to look at the inside of those buildings if still standing to get a match. Be careful that you don't label these photos wrong if you save them. They will all take some study to identify properly. There are over 40 of these, so I will post in numbered order over the next few months.

This stereo-opticon was donated to the museum today by Irene Radcliff Williams of Clarksfield. About 50 slides date from 1904 to 1906, including the San Francisco earthquake. This was entertainment before TikTok. Most museums have one of these, but this was our first.

Here are some photos from our field trip to the Historic Lyme Village near Bellevue today. We had a good group and enjoyed lunch afterwards at the Twin Lakes Golf Club. We even got some ideas for our next trip.

Have you been to the John Wright mansion from 1882? How about the John Seymour 1836 Greek Revival home - the Detterman log church - the Schug hardware store - the National postmark museum - the Merry schoolhouse - the Rose tavern? Lyme Village has almost enough buildings to fill every labeled letter on this map and you can see them all at once!

After an extensive tour of the pioneer village and Wright Mansion, we will have lunch off the menu at the Twin Lakes Golf Club. The New London Area Historical Society meets this Sunday at the museum (13 East Main Street) at 1:30 PM. We will be reviewing a collection of 1910 business photographs that we acquired and will try to match them up with an exact location and company name.

Some large tintypes of Zilpha Robbins Hibbard 1802-1884 and her husband Marvin Hibbard 1797-1879 that were recently donated to the museum. They lived in Fitchville and were buried in the cemetery there.
