What an incredible night at New Hope Arts!
Last night’s opening reception for Liberty and Its Shadows brought a wonderful crowd into the gallery for an evening that was both celebratory and deeply thought-provoking. Visitors lingered with the artwork, talked with the artists and one another, asked questions, and engaged with work that was at times beautiful, challenging, uncomfortable, powerful and very much worth talking about.
We are so grateful to the 40 regional artists who trusted us with their work and helped create an exhibition that asks us to look more closely at the world around us and at experiences and perspectives that aren’t always given enough space.
A very special thank you to Foundation Academies for collaborating with New Hope Arts and bringing Men Without Shoes to our gallery. Created by scholars of the Black Student Union, with powerful portraits by Philadelphia artist Shaheed Rucker, the project brings attention to the stories of fourteen Black Revolutionary War soldiers whose contributions have largely been left out of the historical record.
And there is more to come! Join us on Thursday, September 10 for a screening of the Men Without Shoes documentary followed by a presentation from the student scholars themselves. We’re especially excited to give these young people the opportunity to share their research and their work directly with our community.
