The North Carolina Railway Museum (NCRM) operates the New Hope Valley Railway, an all-volunteer operated railway where children, parents, grandparents, families, railfans and others can enjoy a day together riding a real train, learning about railroad history, watching the G Scale model garden railroad, visiting the outdoor NCRM and gift shop, or viewing equipment in the rail yard. The public is i

nvited to visit this unique destination in historic Bonsal, North Carolina, located off U.S. Highway 1, Exit 89, just 30 minutes southwest of downtown Raleigh. During the ride season, which begins in the spring and lasts through the end of the year, trains generally operate one Saturday and one Sunday each month (with multiple departure times), as well as 10:30 a.m. rides on one Wednesday and one Friday each month. Special Halloween and Santa trains run during October and December. Visitors to our historic museum and railway enjoy a train ride in a covered, open-air passenger car. The Triangle’s Train travels along four miles of historic track through piney woods and over a trestle on an hour-long, round-trip ride from Bonsal to New Hill and back. Our train rides take place in all weather conditions—rain, snow, wind, sleet, heat waves, etc. Go to www.TriangleTrain.com to see the dates for public train rides, times and fares. Purchasing tickets online in advance is recommended as available seats can fill up quickly. You can also support our all-volunteer organization with a donation (click the Donate Button on our page). One hundred percent of donations and NHVR ticket fare revenues (after sales taxes), go directly to our museum and help us continue to preserve railroad history, maintain our track and equipment, and share our love of trains with the Triangle-area and beyond! All donations are tax deductible.

Recognize this spot? 👀 Did you know the tracks here once ran at ground level?

The road that now passes beneath the bridges at today’s New Hope Valley Railway is Old US 1. In the 1930s, however, it was the original US 1, a major highway stretching 2,390 miles from Key West, FL, to Fort Kent, ME, near the Canadian border. As the longest north–south highway in the United States, it served as a vital East Coast travel route.

With heavy traffic crossing the railroad at grade, the Bonsal crossing (shown in the second photo) became known as one of the most dangerous intersections along the US 1 corridor. The third image is an AI-enhanced view of the crossing as it once appeared.

Over the years, this busy junction was the site of many accidents, including the 1934 Model T crash pictured in the fourth photo.

The fifth image illustrates the original 1930s track layout, with the red arrow marking the location of the intersection.

To improve safety and maintain traffic flow, the roadway was eventually lowered and bridges were constructed, creating the underpasses we see today. A small change in elevation, but a lasting impact on history.
