📣 Please join us for a special public program this Saturday, March 14th, at 1:30, at the Island Free Library! 📣
Howard el‑Yasin (he/they), an interdisciplinary artist, educator, and curator based in New Haven, CT, will give an artist talk to the community. Hosted by Low Season Artist Projects and sponsored by the Block Island Arts Council, this program offers an opportunity to learn about el‑Yasin’s expansive, research-driven art practice and their engagement with questions of materiality, value, and identity.
In recent years, el‑Yasin has developed a distinctive body of work centered on everyday and castoff materials such as banana skins and dryer lint, which they collect from friends, family, and their wider community. Works featured in their March 2023 solo exhibition “Specific Matter” at Real Art Ways included thousands of baked banana peels and felted tiles made from sorted dryer lint, which transformed the space into immersive sculptural installations. These raw, residual materials become embedded with personal and collective histories, pointing to issues of labor, the global economy, race, and gender. Through this practice, el‑Yasin prompts audiences to reflect on the stories embedded within the materials of daily life.
The artist talk is free and open to the public. We hope to see you there!
