We were honored this weekend with over 100 Naturalists from all over the state of Indiana who gathered at New Harmony State Historic Site to learn more about our region and the 200 years of Naturalist history and importance that New Harmony has fostered.

Dr. Henry, Professional Archaeologist (our archaeology “mascot”) visited New Harmony State Historic Site at the invitation of Kelley Morgan, the Site Manager (https://www.indianamuseum.org/historic-sites/new-harmony-historic-site/). Dr. Henry had a rock solid adventure learning about the town’s fascinating role in early American geology! He discovered that in the 1800s, New Harmony became a gathering place for some of the brightest scientific minds in the country. Early geologists and naturalists, such as William Maclure, David Dale Owen, Gerard Troost, and others (see https://www.usi.edu/science/geology-and-physics/new-harmony/geologists-of-new-harmony), came here to study fossils, minerals, and the landscape along the Wabash River. Their work helped people better understand the natural world long before geology was a widely recognized science. Stay tuned for additional posts about Dr. Henry’s visit to Posey County!
