Five Minutes After Our Divorce Was Final, My Ex Turned To Me And Said, “Take The Girls — I’m Finally Going To Have A Son.” I Didn’t Shed A Tear. I Didn’t Fight With Him. I Simply Left The Keys On The Table And Walked Away — But Hours Later, A Doctor Studied His Pregnant Girlfriend’s Ultrasound, Reviewed Her Medical Records Twice, And Asked One Question That Instantly Silenced His Family’s Celebration
Barely five minutes had passed since our eleven-year marriage officially ended when Adrian looked at me as though I no longer belonged anywhere in his life.
“Take the girls, Claire,” he said. “I’ve got a son on the way now.”
I stayed silent.
Emma was ten years old.
Lily was seven.
Every evening, they still watched the window, hoping to see their father coming home.
At dinner, they continued leaving his usual chair open for him.
Neither of them understood that somewhere along the way, Adrian had begun looking at them as the daughters who had somehow “failed” to provide his family with the one thing they desperately wanted.
A boy.
Someone to carry on the family name.
His girlfriend was expecting a baby, and Adrian’s entire family was already treating the pregnancy like a victory.
His sister Vanessa glanced at me with a faint, self-satisfied smile.
“Maybe things worked out better this way for everybody,” she said.
I met her eyes.
“He already had a family.”
No one had anything to say after that.
I reached into my bag and removed the key to the apartment.
Then I pulled out the SUV’s key fob.
I placed them both quietly on the table.
“They’re yours.”
Adrian smiled.
I knew exactly what he believed he had accomplished.
He thought I was leaving with two children, one suitcase, and absolutely nothing else.
I saw no reason to correct him.
Instead, I turned around and walked away.
Adrian came after me all the way to the curb.
That was when he noticed the car waiting outside.
“Where are you going?”
“To the airport.”
The satisfaction immediately vanished from his face.
“With the girls?”
“Yes.”
His expression tightened.
“What exactly do you mean, with the girls?”
I reached for the car door.
“You signed the documents, Adrian.”
For the first time all morning, uncertainty appeared in his eyes.
I didn’t stick around long enough to explain what he should have understood before signing anything.
Emma and Lily were already waiting for me.
While the three of us boarded a plane toward an entirely different future, Adrian was hurrying to his girlfriend’s ultrasound appointment.
His mother and father had already arrived.
So had his brothers and sisters.
His in-laws were there too.
Practically everyone had gathered around his pregnant girlfriend, eager for their first glimpse of what they were proudly calling the “future of the Mercer family.”
They arrived carrying flowers.
Someone laughed about which relative’s nose the baby might inherit.
Another person raised the Mercer family name almost like they were making a celebratory toast.
And then the doctor suddenly stopped talking.
His eyes remained fixed on the ultrasound screen.
A moment later, he looked down at the medical chart.
Then his attention returned to the monitor.
Adrian was the first person to sense that something had changed.
“So... everything looks okay, right?”
The doctor gave him no immediate response.
Instead, he reviewed one particular detail again.
Then checked it a second time.
I wasn’t standing inside that examination room.
But I know exactly what followed because Adrian called me four hours later.
And his voice sounded nothing like the voice of a man who had just received the son he’d been celebrating.
The doctor finally turned toward Adrian’s girlfriend.
Then he asked her one question that nobody in that room had expected to hear.
Vanessa was the first to lose all the color in her face.
Adrian’s mother slowly lowered the bouquet she had been holding.
A room filled with laughter only thirty seconds earlier suddenly became completely silent.
Adrian stared directly at the doctor.
“What did you just ask her?”
The doctor repeated the question.
This time, he spoke more slowly.
And that was the moment Adrian’s girlfriend....
