WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Our next Open Hangar Day is August 1 (this Saturday). August marks the return of the vintage Japanese motorcycle club, which always brings out a huge crowd. We need volunteers to run the parking lot, the museum, military vehicle rides, the hangar displays, the kitchen, craft tables, face painting and all the other things that make Open Hangar Day special.
IF WE HAVE ENOUGH STAFF, WE'LL BE ABLE TO FLY THE STEARMAN (weather permitting)!
It takes a bunch of volunteers to make OHD work. If enough CAF-ers come to help we'll be able to spare some ride crew and a pilot to fly rides so if you’re a member come give us a hand even if it is only for a couple of hours. Call Brian at 913-907-7902 and let him know you’re coming.

As many of you know, the Heart of America Wing (HOA) of the CAF maintains the static display aircraft in Navy Park at New Century Airport. Over the past several years, our volunteers have washed the aircraft and completed minor repairs to help preserve these historic airplanes. This year, we're taking things to the next level with some phantastic upgrades, including major repairs, fresh paint, and new decals. We're excited to announce that the restoration process is already underway!
Today, two dedicated HOA members, Jim Boughn and Rick Schubert, completed the first major repair on the two-seat A-7 Corsair. The starboard wing flap had been stuck in the down position for quite some time. After plenty of hard work, determination, and even a bruised knuckle or two, they successfully disconnected the seized actuator and secured the flap in the up—or flight—position. We all agree she already looks better, and we can't wait to see her transformation as the restoration continues. Stay tuned for more updates as we bring these aircraft back to their best!

Save the date, a week from this Saturday on August 1st Open Hangar Day returns to the Heart of America Hangar. Along with the usual paper airplane making, flight simulators, rides in military vehicles, custom dog tag making, face painting, kids crafts and of course hotdogs, we will be hosting a rally with the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Association. There is a lot going on at the hangar and admission is free. Come check out the fun. #6 Aero Plaza New Century, KS 66031. For additional information call Brian at 913-907-7902.

If anyone was wondering where Jeff Shetterly’s and his beautiful yellow SNJ-6 Texan has been, they are at Oshkosh doing an outstanding job of representing the Heart of America Wing of the CAF. Jeff has been thrilling the crowds with his entertaining and thrilling airshow performances. If you love airplanes it is a must that you visit Oshkosh at least once.

Yesterday’s general meeting at the Heart of America Wing was capped off with an amazing guest speaker. We were privileged to hear Jesse Reed tell us about his tour as a Top Gun instructor. His answer to the question “how accurate is the movie Top Gun” was very interesting and not at all what I expected. Anyone who didn’t attend missed a fantastic program. The lunch of smoked brisket pulled pork and chicken was fantastic and tasted much better with the side of camaraderie that was served with it. Events like these really highlight the value the wing to the community.

Reminder, don’t miss tomorrow’s general meeting at the Heart of America Wing hangar at #6 Aero Plaza New Century, Ks 66031. We are privileged to have Jesse Reed, a combat veteran of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom and a previous Top Gun instructor as our guest speaker. Come find out what is going on around the hangar such as were hosting a rally with Vintage Japanese Motorcycle association during Open Hangar Day on August 1st. Members are encouraged to attend and the public is welcome. Call Brian at 913-907-7902 for more information.

We stand corrected about the two A-7’s in Navy Park. After a conversation with a couple of retired Navy pilots at our usual Wednesday morning breakfast club at a local diner, what I called a starboard flap is actually a speed brake. There is no substitute for experience. We are blessed to have such a wealth of experience and knowledge at the Heart of America Wing.

Our guest speaker this Saturday is Commander Jesse Reed, United States Navy (retired). Jesse served 20 years in the Navy as a fighter pilot, flying the F/A-18 Hornet with Strike Fighter Squadron 147, and Strike Fighter Squadron 32. As a reservist, he flew as an instructor for the EA-18G Growler with Electric Attack Squadron 129. During his career, he flew combat missions in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, graduated from the Navy Fighter Weapons School—better known as TOPGUN—and subsequently served as a TOPGUN instructor and evaluator. Commander Reed spent most of his underway time aboard the USS JOHN C STENNIS, as well as a ship with deep Kansas City roots, the USS HARRY S TRUMAN. Come visit us this coming Saturday and hear more of his amazing story. For more information call Rick at 913-638-8613.

My family visited the KC Auto Museum in Olathe today where we were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the exhibits. The catalyst for our visit was the military vehicle display provided by the Military Vehicle Preservation Association (MVPA) which will be there until the end of July. As lots of you are aware, many of the MVPA members have dual membership with the Heart of America Wing of the CAF. It was a delight to see the collection that they provided for the museum. I highly recommend taking an afternoon to visit the display as we thoroughly enjoyed seeing the unique vehicles that our local members own.
