Earlier this summer, the AC drains in the museum developed a blockage, causing them to overflow and damage the kitchen ceiling below. The Heart of America Wing of the CAF is fortunate to have such a talented and dedicated group of volunteers who consistently step up when problems arise around the hangar. One group of volunteers repaired the blocked drains, while another took care of the damage to the kitchen ceiling sheetrock. Thank you to everyone who pitched in! These kinds of projects may not be as fun or exciting as some of the other activities around the hangar, but they are essential to keeping our hangar in good shape—and your contributions are very much appreciated. We couldn’t do it without you!

The October staff meeting will be Thursday, October 1 at 7 p.m. at the hangar located at #6 Aero Plaza New Century, KS 66031. All CAF HOA members are invited and encouraged to attend. As always, the public is also welcome to attend. There's a lot to talk about: staff elections, painting the Navy Park planes, the Christmas party, and more!
Staff elections are coming up soon. Come to the meeting to learn more about what our staff members do and perhaps consider volunteering yourself! This year we're electing (or re-electing) six staff positions: Finance, Adjutant, Maintenance, Safety, Education, and Development. If you’re a member and you’re interested in serving on staff, please let the nominating committee know. Committee members are Steve Zimmerman (913-302-4452), Ron Wright (816-223-2573) or Brian Von Bevern (913-461-6777). You can find the job descriptions for Unit Staff Officers on the CAF national website, in the "Unit Manual" section. If you’re undecided about running for office but later decide you’d like to be a candidate, be advised that any write-in candidate must submit their name before the October general meeting (October 17) so headquarters has time to vet all candidates. The Heart of America Hangar was hopping Saturday night! The Commemorative Air Force hosted the Daughters of the American Revolution 1940s Hangar Dance, and what a wonderful evening it was! The decorations were outstanding, the food was delicious, and the band was incredible. Guests also enjoyed some special extras, including Jeep rides and custom WWII-style dog tags which were a perfect touch for this memorable evening! Saturday was a busy day around the Commemorative Air Force Heart of America Hangar!
As usual, our general meeting was both informative and entertaining, with staff reports and, of course, plenty of Dave Dyer’s famous Dad jokes. We were also fortunate to hear from one of our own, Bob Golightly. After watching his Patriot Features video, those attending had the opportunity to ask Bob questions about his impressive three-decade flying career, including tours in Vietnam and assignments at the Pentagon. After a great lunch—thanks to Beth McCale—we headed to Navy Park, where a dedicated group of volunteers braved the extreme heat to get to work. They washed both A-7s and began scraping and sanding the TA-7C two-seater in preparation for its new paint. Great job, everyone! Your time, hard work, and dedication to preserving these historic aircraft for future generations are truly appreciated. 🇺🇸✈️

Join us this Saturday at the CAF-Heart of America Wing hangar for our next general meeting! Our Heritage Speaker this month is our very own Bob Golightly. Bob flew fighters for the U.S. Air Force during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, including time in several of the famous “Century Series” jets. He also flew F-4 Phantoms in Vietnam. Sean Winn has done his usual extraordinary job capturing Bob’s story in a Patriot Features video. Come see and hear Bob’s incredible story! In addition to our Heritage Speaker, we’ll have:
A recap of our most recent Open Hangar Day, An update on our beautiful PT-19 that is in the final stages of restoration and a delicious lunch following the meeting! 🍽️ Members are encouraged to attend, and as always, the public is welcome!

Four dedicated Heart of America volunteers Steve Zinmerman, Brian Von Bevern, Bob Robinson, and Rick Schubert made the trip today to Raven Aero in Junction City to complete a few more minor details on the newly restored PT-19 Fairchild. The team installed two under-wing panels, installed the wingtip lights, applied the N-numbers to the vertical stabilizer, installed the cowlings, and, most importantly, weighed the aircraft. Like most of us with a few years behind us, she’s gained a couple of pounds since the last time she was weighed! 😄There is still some paperwork to finalize, but she is very, very close to getting airborne again. Great work, everyone! Your time, talent, and dedication are very much appreciated. We can’t wait to see this beautiful aircraft back in the air! ✈️

On 15 September 1969: Test pilots Milton Dee Sills and James Leon LeSeuer took the prototype Cessna Fanjet 500, N500CC, for its first flight at Wichita Municipal Airport, Wichita, Kansas. The 1 hour, 45-minute fight was reported to be “highly successful.” Milt Sills said, “The flight went well; she handled beautifully, much as we expected—even a little better.” After the flight, Cessna officially named the new airplane Citation. https://www.thisdayinaviation.com/

Dedicated volunteers from the Heart of America Wing of the CAF made another trip to Raven Aero Service in Junction City on Wednesday, where they put some of the final touches on the PT-19. They repaired the grounding on the magneto switch, installed almost all of the inspection covers, ran the engine, and made a few minor adjustments. We still need to install a few missing screws in the fuel tank covers and weigh the aircraft. Weather permitting, she should be ready to fly after that so we can bring her home!
Great work, everyone! We’re getting very close! ✈️
