We are off on another dive trip so it seemed fitting to repost some videos I took of three Japanese Zeros in the cargo hold of the Fujikawa Maru which was sunk during Operation Hailstone at Truk Lagoon ( Micronesia) in February 1944.

The Swingsters' performance at this year's Hangar Dance with high-flying tricks and girls flying through the air to great music promises to be a thrilling and entertaining show. It will be quite a sight to see such coordinated aerial stunts synchronized with lively music. Are you planning to attend, or would you like more details about the event?

Our Boeing-Stearman Model 75 is clearly ready to shine for the 2026 ride season. Huge congratulations to pilot Steve Zimmerman and the entire Heart of America crew on a successful annual inspection and test flight. An hour and a half in the air with a report that “she flew like a dream” is exactly what everyone wants to hear before a busy season starts. Sounds like the ride crew should prepare for a full calendar and a lot of happy passengers getting their first taste of open-cockpit flying.

Great News!!! The Stearman annual is completed, and we are back to flying status. We did it early this year so that we would not have to take her out of service in the middle of ride season and the beautiful lady passed with flying colors. Get ready ride crew members, we are about to get really busy!

You’ve saved the date, now it’s time to buy your tickets. This year we are doing something extra. This year in honor of America’s 250th anniversary we have put together a photo booth complete with backdrop and props for you to take your own photos at. Of course we will have the usual amazing dinner, live music and if your so inclined dancing to a medley of tunes beginning with oldies from the 40’s and ending the evening with 70’ and 80’s tunes.

There is a new addition around the hangar! Member/Adjutant Rick Schubert recently purchased a 1941 Plymouth P11 staff car. With the help of Chuck Rau, Rick located the jewel in North Conway New Hampshire. After making the deal and a lengthy road trip the Plymouth arrived at the hangar on Saturday. Since the restoration is complete and the car runs like a Swiss watch the plans are to have it available for display and rides on open hangar days and special events. Come out and see the new addition. For directions and events times call Brian at 913-907-7902.

The May monthly meeting of the Heart of America Wing was well attended with about fifty plus members present and enjoying a beautiful day at the hangar. Operations reported that the annual on the PT-13 would be completed in the upcoming week. Finance reported that the wing shared a commonality with Turpentine because we are both solvents. Debbie Martin also received an award for being an outstanding volunteer. Community Outreach Coordinator David Dyer introduced the guest speaker Smitty De Voe who gave a lecture on his eyewitness account at the battle of Xa Cam My also known as Operation Abilene where 80% of his company became casualties. Smitty received the Purple Heart for being shot through his right side. This is such a spell binding story that they made the movie “The Last Full Measure” which was released in January of 2020. Of course, as usual we all enjoyed a delicious lunch prepared by member Linda Sladish.

OUR FIRST ROAD TRIP FOR 2026!
We're taking the Stearman to St. Louis for the Missouri Wing's "Wings over St. Louis" Warbird fly in later this month. While the Missouri Wing will be taking care of the ride desk duties (selling rides and filling out hold harmless forms, for instance) we can still use qualified ride crew members to help load and unload passengers, cleaning and fueling the airplane, and all the other assorted ride crew duties.
We'll be booking rooms at a nearby hotel (yet to be determined) starting Friday and possibly through Sunday (if we sell enough rides to stay late). PARTICIPANTS NEED TO PAY FOR THEIR OWN FOOD AND LODGING! Interested ride crew members should contact Operations Officer Bill England for more details (phone: 913-634-5702, or email: [email protected]).
This could be a great fund raiser for the CAF-HOA, and a great opportunity to bond with the Missouri Wing. Plus; it'll be fun!

Our Heritage Speaker this coming Saturday at the Heart of America General Meeting is Devoe Smith.
Lt. Colonel Smith (retired) is a purple heart Vietnam veteran who served 26 1/2 years active duty US Army. He served two combat tours in Vietnam during the 1960s and was awarded medals including the Purple Heart. The 2020 movie "The Last Full Measure" describes the battle in which Smith's unit suffered 80% casualties. This amazing story of service and devotion is something you won’t want to miss.
