Join Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Mark Lamster for a presentation on his new book Welcome to Paradox City. Blending architectural history, social history, and critical writing, Lamster takes readers to the sun-scorched origins of Dallas as a remote outpost on the Texas frontier, then traces the city’s development into the dynamic, if imperfect, metropolis we know today. Welcome to Paradox City is an illuminating, illustrated look at the often-invisible ways that architecture shapes a city and its culture from its founding, to the present, and onward into the future.

Mark Lamster is the architecture critic of the Dallas Morning News and the winner of the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for Criticism. He is both a Loeb fellow of the Harvard Graduate School of Design Graduate School of Design and a fellow of the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture at SMU. His biography of the late architect Philip Johnson, The Man in the Glass House (Little Brown), was a finalist for the 2018 National Book Critics Circle Award for Biography.

Glass House Presents is an ongoing series of talks, performances, and other live events that extend the site’s historic role as a gathering place for artists, architects, and other creative minds. This event is co-hosted by New Canaan Library and supported in part by the New Canaan Community Foundation.

The Glass House expresses its deep gratitude and sorrow upon learning of the death of Yayoi Kusama. Ten years ago, in 2016, Kusama’s graciously agreed to mount Narcissus Garden, a major exhibition that culminated in a special three-week site specific installation, Dots Obsession – Alive, Seeking for Eternal Hope, that powerfully expressed the links between history, preservation, contemporary art and culture.  Kusama generously lent her magic to the site, merging her creative vision with Johnson’s, transforming the Glass House into an infinity room. The world took notice, and so did the international press and legacy media elevating the Glass House to stratospheric heights: The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, AP, Fast Company, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, W, Cultured, wallpaper*,  Robb Report, artnews, White Hot, Architectural Digest, Architectural Record, domus, Metropolis among many others.  Related programs including Glass with the late composer Ryuichi Sakamoto and artist Carsten Nicolai, who performs as alva noto were pressed ito a record and reported in Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and Resident Advisor; and the film workshop of the documentary Kusama: Infinity with Executive Producers Alice Koh and David Koh would go on to premiere at Sundance Film Festival.
Let us all remember and celebrate Kusama with the poem she wrote for the occasion:

“Dots Obsession - Alive, Seeking for Eternal Hope,”  by Yayoi Kusama (2016)
The dotted glass house brings eternal love and hope.
Before the Glass House, those who see it promise their eternal prayers for peace and love.
Glass House, our everything.
With feelings of life and death, the house that I love encourages life.
Glass House forever.

Donald Judd’s first concrete work, Untitled, 1971, was the last element added to the Glass House site’s historic core. The sculpture completes the composition of “asymmetric sliding rectangles” and “circles” that Johnson described in the first published article about the Glass House, “House at New Canaan, Connecticut,” Architectural Review, September 1950. Located at the base of the driveway and rounding the corner, Judd’s sculpture directs visitors around it and toward the entrance of the Glass House, integral to Johnson’s choreographed processional through the site. Conserving this sculpture enables the visitor to better understand the composition of the site as a whole.

📆 Join us Thursday, July 24th Knoll New York City showrooms

If you joined us for this year’s Summer Party, you will remember the striking Knoll installation inspired by the Glass House and Philip Johnson’s vision of modern design.

We’re delighted to share that the installation is now on view at Knoll’s New York showroom, and we’d love for you to see it again, or experience it for the first time.

The installation reimagines iconic design classics through bold new colors and materials inspired by Philip Johnson’s New Canaan Glass House. Knoll will host an open house with drinks and hors d’oeuvres on:

Thursday, July 23, 4:00–7:00 PM
Knoll New York
251 Park Avenue South, Floor 2

This installation was first presented as part of our 2026 Summer Party celebration, and we’re grateful to our friends at Knoll for continuing to showcase this creative interpretation of the Glass House story.

We hope you’ll stop by if you’re in the city and enjoy a closer look at this special collaboration.
