General John Stark and his men won the Battle of Bennington on August 16, 1777 - 249 years ago today - and captured 4 cannons from the British.
This photo of the Molly Stark cannon appeared in the National Geographic magazine in 1951. An attached post-it note suggests the gun crew may have included Artemus Boulter, Fred Cann, and Charles French.

Among the museum visitors today was New Boston violin maker Trey Kendall. In this photo Trey is holding one of our Farley violins, made in 1893.

Charles Farley's workshop was in his house next to Dodge's Store. Another of his violins is in the collection of Boston's Museum of Fine Arts.

Trey identified the Farley bows as made of Pernambuco, a prized wood from Brazil, with horsehair strings.

People in New Boston took more care with their appearance in the old days.
This photo is undated. Written on its reverse is "Minuet."
We think it was taken behind Town Hall and we guess the date was c.1920 based on the convertible roofs of the cars parked on Meetinghouse Hill Rd above the swings.

Who remembers Syrup of Ipecac and Tincture of Iodine? One is an emetic, the other an antiseptic.
These bottles are from Ernest Hagland's drugstore, now Tates Gallery, and have long passed their expiry dates.

The Historical Society invites you to a free presentation: "The Dane Family of Clark Hill Road"
Thursday, July 9, 2026 at 7:00pm in the New Boston Community Church
Jim Dane's niece Ginny McKinnon tells the story of the Dane family who arrived in New Boston in 1780.

When we learned that this year's 4th of July parade theme is "Moments in American History," the Historical Society volunteers knew we had to have a float. We look forward to seeing you Saturday morning!

The Goffstown Historical Society just gave us a wonderful book, containing notes about every man from New Boston who served during the American Revolution.
William Beard, for example, fought in the battles of Bunker Hill and Bennington.

We think the book was made in preparation for the 1920 soldiers' monument now on the Town Green.
The monument, which lists the names of men and women who served our country in times of war from the French and Indian War (1754-1763) to the Persian Gulf war, was last updated in 2024.
