Feast Friend.......Rev. Manuel P. Ferreira

We just received word, that a true friend of the Feast..... an incredible priest, with an infectious smile and dear friend has passed away.

Father Ferreira, 90, was a second generation native of Provincetown, graduating from Provincetown High School in 1947. He was also a US Navy veteran, serving in the Korean War on the aircraft carrier Midway. Father Ferreira’s dad, John, was a US Coast Guard veteran, so he was raised by his Azorean grandmother Maria, instilling in him the Portuguese-Azorean culture, to where he spoke Portuguese fluently.
Father Ferreira was ordained to the priesthood at St. Mary Cathedral in Fall River on April 2, 1960, by the late Most Rev. James L. Connolly, then diocesan ordinary. After his ordination, Father Ferreira served curacies at St. Elizabeth Church, Fall River; Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church New Bedford, and St. John the Baptist Church, New Bedford. He was named administrator of St. John the Baptist Church in 1969, then pastor from 1971 until 1979, remaining in New Bedford as pastor of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church from 1979 until being transferred to St. Anthony Church in 1991. He was designated dean of the New Bedford Deanery of the diocese in 1990 and served in that capacity until his transfer to the Taunton parish. During his retirement, he assisted at St. John’s of God in Somerset for 15 years.
Father Ferreira has received many honors in his career, including being named as the Prince Henry Society’s man of the year.

Father Ferreira’s high school yearbook ambition: “I want to make people laugh." Father had many jokes. We will miss his smile, his jokes, and his spirituality!!

Eternal rest grant to him, O Lord; and let light perpetual shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Feast of the Blessed Sacrament - Official

Feast of the Blessed Sacrament - Official

Good afternoon residents of the city of New Bedford, neighboring cities and towns, Feast patrons from close and afar, and family and friends.

I hope all are healthy and safe as we all strive to get through and overcome this pandemic COVID19 virus that has shaken up our society with much illness and the loss of many lives.

What I am about to disclose to you is a topic that I never thought I, along with the Executive Officers and Board of Directors of Club Madeirense S.S. Sacramento Inc., in conjunction with the 2020 Feast President Richard Fernandes and the 2020 Feast Committee, would ever have to entertain.

Over the past month or so I know people have heard through social media that the 2020 Feast of the Blessed Sacrament was on as scheduled and we were moving forward with our plans.

I think people need to know that our Feast is an event that starts it's planning for the following year with the incoming Feast committee on the Sunday night of the Feast, and the planning doesn't stop until the cannon sounds and kicks off our pride filled four day Feast, bringing family and friends together, carrying on a tradition for the past 105 years.

From the beginning of this pandemic virus which has temporarily taken over our society, our Board of Directors have had virtual meetings every two weeks, and over the past few weeks I have had multiple conversations with Mayor Jon Mitchell, gathering input from him along with the concerns that the city has regarding our organization having a Feast this year. Mayor Mitchell's opinion was that if we were to have a Feast this year, we would be putting many lives at risk and it would be the best decision for us to cancel the Feast this year. Knowing the seriousness of this pandemic COVID 19 virus, and the possible effects it could have if we had a Feast, as the President of our organization, I want to inform you that the Executive Officers and the Board of Directors of Club Madeirense S.S. Sacramento Inc., in conjunction with the 2020 Feast President Richard Fernandes and the 2020 Feast Committee, have made a decision to cancel the 106th celebration of the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament for the year 2020.

For those of you that know what the Feast means to our organization and myself, (tradition, our heritage, family and friends ), this is not something that pleases me to tell everyone, but it's the right decision to make for the safety and well being of all the residents of New Bedford, the residents of all our neighboring towns and cities, all our Feast patrons young and old, countless volunteers, our membership and their family members and friends.

Club Madeirense S.S. Sacramento’s motto is "God help us so we can help others” Our organization is thankful for being able to proudly give back to the community whenever possible, to various charities and organizations: Immaculate Conception church, food baskets for needy families during Thanksgiving and Christmas, and to many, many graduating high school students that receive an academic scholarship as well as vocational award recipients who have chosen to pursue a trade.

Our organization will continue this year to award numerous academic scholarships and vocational awards to many of this year’s graduating seniors in the greater New Bedford area and our surrounding communities. We will continue to serve our community

In closing, I can't tell you enough, how much Club Madeirense S.S. Sacramento Inc., appreciates the support we receive from you, the people of our community, as well as the many businesses and corporations, year after year, Feast after Feast.

A sincere thank you to you all as we move forward making plans for the 106th celebration of the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament for 2021. We look forward to seeing you all then at Madeira Field. Be safe and stay healthy.

God's Blessings to you all,

Do meu coracao para o teu!

Respectfully,

Michael R. Canasta, President
Club Madeirense S.S. Sacramento Inc.

FEAST OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT 2020

The officers and board of directors for the Club Madeirense S.S. Sacramento of New Bedford and the officers of the 2020 Feast of the Blessed Sacrament, are having continuous discussions concerning this year’s Feast.

We understand the Feast has a major economic impact on the City of New Bedford and the community, but our ultimate consideration is the welfare of our members, guests, volunteers, and the community. We are aware of the impact the Covid 19 virus is having on the Greater New Bedford area and we have been in discussions with Mayor Jon Mitchell, state government and healthcare leaders. We have a meeting scheduled in May to make our decision.

The Wall of Hope

Muro da Esperança

Traditionally, in Madeira, held since 1979, on an appeal to the world of peace, involves over a thousand children who go from Avenida Arriaga to Praça do Municipio to place one flower on the wall to symbolize hope. The children’s purity is associated to the flowers delicacy, and when one adds a flower on the wall it means an appeal for peace. The wall of flowers symbolizes hope for a better world.

For the second year we hope to bring this great tradition to the Museum of Madeiran Heritage during the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament held August 1st – August 4th 2019. We ask for the help from all generations within the community to bring fresh flowers and to place them on the wall as a symbol of their peace.

Our History

The Museum of Madeiran Heritage was opened at the start of the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament in 1999. It is the only museum dedicated to the history and heritage of the islands of Madeira that lie 600 miles southwest of Portugal. Inside, visitors will find a fascinating collection of Madeiran art, and fine crafts including, embroidery, lace, linens, pottery and weaving. Traditional costumes of Folkloric dancers are on display along with an authentic ‘corca’ or sled used to transport visitors from the village of Monte high atop a hill outside of Funchal, the capital city of Madeira. On the north side of the museum is the beautiful Madeira Garden, with a fountain, grape arbor and plantings surrounding the lawn reminiscent of the garden isle. A large brick patio commemorates members and friends who have donated to the on-going work of the museum. Individual engraved bricks continue to be sold and arrangements may be made with the museum staff. The museum continues to add to its collections by kind donations from people of Madeiran heritage throughout North America and through ties to Madeira. If you have or know of items of Madeiran origin and are willing to consider a donation, please contact the museum at (508) 994-2573. The location address of the Museum of Madeiran Heritage was changed in 2001 to 1 Funchal Place as a way of honoring and establishing a stronger tie to its ‘motherland’. The official mailing address remains 50 Madeira Avenue, New Bedford, MA 02746. The museum operates as an affiliate of the Clube Madeirense S.S. Sacramento, Inc. and is staffed by member volunteers.

My trip to Madeira, home of my grandparents, included staying in Funchal, whose hills were studded with homes, open spaces and lush growth. I tried my best to capture it in this watercolor. I was proud to march for my godfather and committee member, Manuel Fernandes, Jr., in the 1957 parade.

I am delighted that you folks got around to used the domain I had reserved and saved for you. Happy to join your ranks and spread the word to family and friends.
https://youtu.be/Cbo3doJy3EA Listen and watch a very proud Madeiran who was born in Camacha Madeira tell her story of her first impression of visiting the Museum of Madeiran Heritage, telling about her Father, Brother and a few explanations of some of the artifacts on display. Listen to her tell about the house her Father and Brother built in Funchal Madeira which is on display at the Museum. Listen to her nephew tell the story of how and why his father constructed the figurine’s on display at the Museum. He was the one who lent the money to get the Museum off of the ground and got the wall built. Yes, I had my Mother come to the Museum and in the beginning to interview her which I had thought we should have interviewed older Madeirans who lived in Madeira and have on record as to life in Madeira to share with the world. Sad to say this was never accomplished back then and it is sad to say from my perspective it was sad, for they had so much to share on telling their story on our Heritage which was has been lost forever. Yes, again things should be shared with the world but as the men say too much to do and no help but, what about getting women involved. Hope you enjoy this interview by listening to my beloved Mother, Josephine Baptista Teixeira on her insight of the Museum and her living in New Bedford, MA. She died on December 18, 2008 at the age of 97 of just old age of Altimeter’s.
One of the best kept secrets in New Bedford, is the Museum of Madeiran Heritage.....1 Funchal Place, New Bedford, Ma. Free admission......... A "walk" through history, of the Portuguese immigration to the America, a look at Madeiran culture....... while you are there...... pick up a 100 Year anniversary book, an incredible pictorial of New Bedford in the last 100 years...... did I mention "free-admission"?
