130 year ago this month, the Woman's Edition of the New Albany Evening Tribune described the ongoing work of the Culbertson family at the Widow's Home. The charity, established by William Culbertson for the care of indigent widows, was continued by his third wife Rebecca after his death. The article states, "At his death, Mrs. Culbertson immediately took charge of it, and has continued not only to give it her earnest attention, but her personal supervision". The Widow's Home operated well into the 20th century, and now is a private residence.

A Presidential Story

In August of 1883, President Chester A. Arthur made a visit to Louisville. According to the New Albany Daily Ledger, upon his departure, he made a short stop in New Albany to greet the citizens and meet a nonpartisan delegation of local politicians. Once the train set off again, he was accompanied by a group of prominent citizens from both Louisville and New Albany, including William Culbertson, until he reached Chicago.

In honor of Presidents Day, we will be open for FREE tours on Monday February 16th, at 10am, 12pm, 2pm and 4pm. Reservations are not required, but encouraged by calling the site.

A Presidential Story (Almost)

The man pictured below is James G Blaine, a statesman who served in various roles throughout his career, including as Secretary of State under Garfield, Arthur, and Harrison.

He was a front runner for the Republican nomination for the 1884 Presidential election. During 1883, he went on the campaign trail, including a stop in New Albany in October of that year.

According to the New Albany Evening Tribune, Mr. Blaine was hosted by the Culbertson family. According to the paper, "On alighting from the train Mr. Blaine was at once driven to the residence of the Hon. W.S. Culbertson, where he remained over Sunday, receiving but few callers".

After his speech, which was attended by thousands of people, he moved on down the campaign trail by train. He would go on to lose the election narrowly to Grover Cleveland in 1884.

Blaine is featured in the 2025 Netflix miniseries Death By Lightning, which is based on the book Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President by Candice Millard.

Speaking of Presidents! We will be open for FREE tours on Presidents Day- Monday, February 16th. Join us at our regular tour times, 10, 12, 2, or 4. Reservations are not required but encouraged by calling the site.
