Nothing new except that I was relieved from Co. "A" to act as regiment quartermaster, Col. Scott has resigned. McCall gas been appointed O.M. Capt. Jones is elected or recommended for Colonel of 32nd.

Struck tents at 6:00 A.M. and started for the mouth of Red River, distance ten miles. Here we met some new recruits from Story. Tomlinson came from home and brought no letters for me - alright just my luck.

The Nevada Community Historical Society hosted Central Elementary 3rd Grade students at Evergreen Lane Historic Complex to learn about pioneer life, highlighting history from the 1860s to the 1940s. The Society promotes education through these types of community outreach programs. We would like to extend a big thank you to the 3rd grade students; they were very well-behaved and asked so many great questions! We loved having you! Thank you to the teachers, other staff members, chaperones, and volunteers; without you, programs like this would not be possible!

May 20, 1864

We were called into line at 3:00 A.M. and marched across the bayou to Ft. Walker. At 10:00 A.M. we crossed on a bridge of the boats which were tied together and served as pontoon. We were the last to go over. The enemy showed themselves only once today and the artillery boys opened up on them and they left. Here we met the Story County boys who are in the 23rd, Schoonover, Ballard, Lowell and others. Lay with them about one hour when we were ordered to move and go into camp. Here for the first time in two weeks we camped in column and got a nights rest.

8:00 A.M. Ordered into line and march out to take over position in a ditch. While I laid there I received another letter from home of April 27. Sorry to hear that mother was unwell. We lay here all day but the enemy was so
badly whipped yesterday that they have not shown themselves today.

MUSIC AT THE MANSION COMING UP IN JUNE

The annual Music at the Mansion, two-band free event on the lawn of the historic Evergreen Lane property, 1204 H Ave., will be held on Saturday, June 13, from 4-9 p.m.
This year's event will feature opening band, Vivace, followed by headliner, Bad Friends. People wanting to attend should bring a lawn chair/blanket to sit on the lawn. There is no other seating provided. This event is free, but there will be vendors selling food and other treats on site. This year's vendors include The Wobbly Pin, Chocolaterie Stam with gelato, Cellar Winery, and Smokin' Critters BBQ.
The Nevada Public Arts Advisory Commission will have a display on the lawn from 3-5 p.m. for viewing.
Monetary donations are graciously accepted during Music at the Mansion by the Nevada Community Historical Society, whose members usually pass a hat to collect donations during the event.

May 18, 1864

I was on picket last night and Turner and McLaren were with me and went to change the line and enemy close and moving most of the night. At 5:00 A.M. we were relieved and marched back about two miles to get a little coffee. Col. Shane's brigade was ordered forward and to the rear of two brigades of the 16th Army Corps and one brigade of cavalry. The enemy opened fire with some eight or ten pieces of artillery and our artillery met them and that made some music. We were drawn up in line and marched up in support of the artillery. While we lay there C.M. McCall came up and brought me a letter from my wife. I looked it over but must say I had no time to look too well. Men and horses falling all around. Before we hardly got there, there was a charge and we went in. Had quite a fight. Lt. Templeton wounded in both legs and lost some eight or ten men in the regiment. We drove them and took two hundred prisoners today. Went into camp at 10:30 Ρ.Μ. hard day, this. The enemy have 12,000 and the prisoners say they will be sent forward tonight and will fight us.

During the years 1864-1865 of THE CIVIL WAR

May 17, 1864

Marched today about six miles. Enemy close on our rear and open fire on us every chance they have. Road very dusty and weather very warm. Here we learn that "Mother Banks" has been relieved by Gen. Canby also that Gen. Grant has whipped Lee like the devil and is marching on Richmond. I think we will do something now that we have a commander. Believe such a man as Banks ought to be taken out and sh*t, that will attempt to handle such an army. Having 30,000 fighting men as good as ever took a gun, retreating from such a force as the enemy has.
