Nearly 500 men of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints volunteered to serve in the U.S. army during the war with Mexico in 1846. The march from Council Bluffs to California was described by their commanding officer Lt. Colonel Philip St. George Cooke as of "great value to our country" adding, "history may be searched in vain for an equal march of infantry."
Many members of the Mormon Battalion were among the early settlers of Nephi and other communities in Juab County. Perhaps you are a descendant of one of those valiant Mexican War volunteers?
Michael Anderson will conduct a discussion of their great service and contributions. Mike is an author and historian who has researched Mormon Battalion history and other early American history for forty years. He resided in Nephi for about eleven years before moving to Utah County. He has recently been involved with the documentation and labeling of artifacts belonging to Pvt. Timothy Hoyt of Co. "A", an early settler of Nephi. So few artifacts remain today that were used by members of the Mormon Battalion. The Nephi DUP museum proudly cares for and displays Hoyts precious leather accoutrements in honorable remembrance of his service along with all members of the Mormon Battalion.

The DUP has arranged a very special presenter/historian who knows this subject well. This will be cool to see at the fair!!

The 2026 ISDUP Convention/Seminar was held yesterday, Saturday June 18, 2026 at Woods Cross High School, North Salt Lake, Utah. We engaged in breakout departments for training and concluded with a fabulous speaker in our main assembly with over 400 of our favorite friends. Dr.Megan Weiss has recently graduated from the U of U. She has spent 2 years researching the history of Daughters of Utah Pioneers. We are proud to announce that a portion of her work was published in the Utah Historical Quarterly in the Winter 2026 volume entitled “A History of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers.” Some of her other accomplishments include working for the Utah Historical Society, served a fellowship at Utah Humanities, hosted a weekly radio show, Beehive Archive, and is now employed on the Women’s History Initiative Team for UHS. We were very fortunate have her speak to us.
Music was provided by a wonderful youth group, AMPLIFY. If you weren’t able to attend this year, plan on next.
