Two states, one dying town, and a highway that time forgot. 🛣️ Glenrio sits right on the Texas and New Mexico line, a Route 66 stop that boomed on passing traffic and then simply stopped.

When the interstate bypassed the old mother road, the cars quit coming almost overnight. 🚗 The motels went dark, the gas pumps rusted in place, and the diner windows filled with dust. Now the cracked asphalt runs straight into the heat haze with nobody left to travel it.

🛣️ Glenrio was a town so small it sat in two states at once, and then the interstate killed it in a single afternoon.

Route 66 ran straight through the middle of it. Motels, a diner, gas pumps, a post office. The Texas side had no state tax so the bars were there. The New Mexico side had no gas tax so the stations were there. The whole town was a hustle built on the fact that a highway went through it and people had to stop.

Then in the early 1970s Interstate 40 opened a few hundred yards away and did not stop. That was it. Not a fire, not a flood, not a drought. Just a road that took the traffic and never gave it back. The population went to zero in a matter of years. 📉

Today you can walk the original 1930s concrete with grass coming up through every joint, past a motel sign with the letters stripped off it, and stand in the exact spot where a whole town used to be worth something. What is the most haunting stretch of old highway you have ever driven? 👇
