Why is there no chapel on Chapel Street, or no school on School Street in Needham??

There was once a chapel on Chapel Street, and a school on School Street, though both are now gone. In 1859, the new Evangelical Congregational church bought a plot of land near the Common and built a small chapel. They used the chapel until 1890, when they sold it to the new St. Joe's parish. It later became a dwelling, and was demolished in 1928. The chapel stood on what is now the middle of Chapel Street, just beside the bank drive-thru. At the time, the road that led from Great Plain Avenue to the chapel (ie, Chapel Street), made a sharp right through what is now the town hall parking lot, and intersected with Highland Avenue. In 1928, the chapel was torn down and Chapel Street was extended straight to meet May Street; its former path became the town hall parking lot/bank drive-thru lane.

The Kimball School was located on Chestnut Street at School Street, where the police and fire station is now located. The Kimball School was built in 1869 and was one of two comprehensive schools (ie, one room per grade); the other was the Avery School in the Heights. All the other schools in Needham at that time were either one- or two-room schoolhouses. Because it was a big building (and these functions were small), the school also held the high school and the public library until both outgrew the space and got their own facilities. The building went out of use as Needham built more full-grade schools, and was torn down for the new police and fire stations in 1929.

Support the Annual Appeal and Help Keep Us On Track!
This past year, we had new exhibits and partnerships, and more events and programs for you to enjoy, including new program series with Historic Newton, and the Wellesley and Natick Historical Societies. Keep us going! Help to preserve the treasures and teach the stories of Needham's past, as we celebrate the history of Needham with You.

In the last few years we have focused on increasing our membership and our programs, and broadening our outreach. Your outstanding generosity and support makes this possible!

The Needham Historical Society does not receive operating funds from the town or state. Our financial support comes ENTIRELY from donations, memberships, grants and fundraising events. Your support of the Annual Appeal is a major source of our activity and strength. So please, be as generous as you can . THANKS!

Visited the Seashore Trolley Museum last werkend and saw the great progress on the trolley 41 that once operated between Needham and Wellesley, stored in Natick division car barn. Became Rays lunch in Natick in 1927. I was told the restoration needs another 30k to finish. 😀

Who are the people in this picture? Where is it taken?
Hello from New Zealand, my name is John Scott and I have found some of my family roots are from Needham. As I live on the other side of the world, is there anybody who would be interested in checking out my family? Family ties are Scott /Monaghan/Mcgowan. Both my Great Aunts were born there 1874-1875. My great grandfather and great grandmother married there in 1873. I would appreciate any help as I have now drawn a blank as only, to what is available on Ancestry .com. William Scott was listed as a weaver...previously from Scotland where they returned to thier home country after the death of one of those Great Aunts, aged I believe six or seven. My reply E-mail is [email protected]....thank-you John.
