"I stayed half a block from Checkpoint Charlie, and was fascinated by the city. It’s fun and vibrant, but at the same time the museums and monuments are sobering reminders of a very dark history. I was especially moved by the Jewish Museum Berlin, and the photo of the young woman with her bicycle was taken as I was walking to the museum. She caught me, and her look is one of consternation and bemusement. I showed her the picture, she liked it, and said she had no problem with me using it. It’s probably my favorite from Berlin."

Angel of the Arcade by

"I was walking through the Arcade, a historic enclosed shopping promenade first opened in downtown Nashville in 1903. I passed the front window of a dressmaker’s shop, where the owner, Semra, was busy at work on her sewing machine. Just as I snapped the photo, she looked up. It wasn’t until later that I noticed that her work light looked like a halo. I dubbed her the “Angel of the Arcade.”
