It’s Tuesday, which means it’s time for another trivia question!

On March 19, 1912, President William Howard Taft came by train from Lowell, MA to Nashua Union Station to lay the cornerstone of a new building on Temple Street. What was this new building?

Hint: According to the official program, the event took place at 10:00 a.m. After the event, President Taft was escorted down Main Street to Railroad Square where he addressed a large crowd. The entourage then went back to Union Street where they proceeded to Manchester, NH.

Fun Fact: We have pictures of this event at the Society!

Nashua Historical Society presents – Mary Estey: Her Life, Ex*****on, & Historic Legacy

Tuesday, October 27, 2026 7:00pm

Speare Memorial Museum 5 Abbott Street, Nashua, NH 03064

Nashua native, Mary Louise Bigham, is the 9x great-granddaughter of Mary and Isaac Estey, sister of Rebecca Nurse, who was wrongfully convicted and executed for the capital crime of witchcraft in September 1692 during the Salem witch-hunt. Mary Louise’s years of research into the lives of Mary and Isaac have become far more than a journey into her own family history. Discovering Mary Estey as a wife, mother, sister, neighbor, and ultimately a victim of the Salem witch-hunt has profoundly shaped Mary Louise’s life and the passions she pursues today. That research inspired a deeper commitment to understanding the events of 1692, correcting long-held misconceptions, and restoring the humanity and individual stories of those whose lives were forever changed by witch-hunting. For Mary Louise, sharing her ancestor’s story has become both deeply personal and an important part of her work as a historian, researcher, presenter, and advocate.

Pop out to the event and join us for an evening of history, discovery, and community. We’d love to see you there!

It’s time for another Trivia Tuesday question!

Sandy Pond, located on National Street, was a popular summer gathering place for Nashuans. Residents could stroll along the shore, swim, fish, or picnic in the shade of the many trees. Youngsters today enjoy the small playground with its “splash pad.”

A special animal was brought to the pond from the Fair Grounds to bathe and drink. Occasionally, someone will search the waters of Sandy Pond for this animal that is said to have drowned in the pond when it wandered too far from the shore and could not make its way back to solid land.

What animal was this?

Hint: It’s a large mammal

Thank you to everyone who attended our “In the Spirit of Friendship” event last night!

Courtesy of our two performers, Michael Lepage and Michele Gabrielson, we were able to step back in time and converse with two of the Revolution’s most influential figures: John Adams and Mercy Otis Warren.

The performance explored how their friendship formed, deepened, and how, despite political tensions and disagreements, it ultimately endured. The event also highlighted Mercy Otis Warren’s role in the American Revolution and examined the political tensions and divisions that shaped the era.

It was a wonderful evening filled with history, storytelling, and insight into the lives and friendship of two remarkable figures.

Thank you to everyone who joined us! We hope you enjoyed the event as much as we did.

We hope to see you again at one of our upcoming events!
