I spent a week photographing belted kingfishers in the hopes of catching them diving up close, or flying by with a fish. All of the mornings were cold by Florida standards, where mist can be seen rising up from the ground on humid mornings. Wood storks and some other wading birds were catching breakfast just after sunrise while I was walking to my spot to photograph my belted kingfishers.

Florida Scrub-Jays hop on the ground with a certain robustness as they navigate around oak scrub. Florida Scrub-Jays are reluctant to fly across non-oak-scrub habitat and rarely stray from the area where they hatched.

Young birds stay with their parents until they can obtain a territory of their own. Until then, they help their parents feed their siblings, keep watch for predators, and defend the territory year-round. These birds are very curious in nature and they will approach humans to get a closer look.

Acorn Ace - I just arrived to photograph a family of Florida Scrub Jays and one happened to drop right down in front of me. I quickly laid down and to my surprise, this scrub jay found an acorn on the ground that I didn't even see!

Ascension - Most people don’t realize how large and powerful the American Bald Eagle is... these birds will dive almost full speed, hit a branch and rip it right off of a dead tree. The talons of a fully grown adult American Bald eagle are bigger than the average human male’s hands in size... imagine that when you see the size of some of these branches they carry back to the nest.

An American Bald Eagle makes the final approach up to the nest with a new addition. These Eagles had been working hard the previous few weeks to tidy up 2 separate nests, which is a LOT of work.
