Explore, create, build, discover, wonder, think, play, and more – Every visit is an adventure! Explore, create, build, discover, wonder, think, play, and more!
Every visit is an adventure in fun and learning. DuPage Children’s Museum ignites the potential of all children to learn through hands-on exploration. The Museum is located in downtown Naperville, a quick walk from the Naperville Metra train station. Parking is free and the building is wheelchair accessible. For information about hours, Museum admission and membership packages, visit dupagechildrens.org or call 630.637.8000.
How children play offers a beautiful window into a child’s inner thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Watch this video (sound on) and ask yourself – What is this child working through as she plays and tells this story about a Ghost Neighborhood?
"This is a Ghost Neighborhood. There are regular ghosts, squiggly ghosts, AND ghost puppies. The apartments don’t allow pets so there is a special puppy house on top of the apartments. Sometimes buildings fall… but it’s just the ghosts playing their tricks!"
A new Good Show! Gallery is on display! Students in grades 4 and 5 from Naperville created Map Art that details and investigates their unique place in this world: physical spaces, journeys, interests, and even their imaginations.
Check it out on your next visit! Learn more at dupagechildrens.org/good-show-gallery
The Good Show! Gallery is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency.

Ruth Spiro’s STEM-themed books encourage a natural sense of wonder, while introducing children to basic science concepts and vocabulary. We’ll soar, sing, and flap our wings at this unique story time, where observation, imagination and participation are encouraged. Parents and caregivers might learn a thing or two as well!

At DCM’s annual benefit, we honor an individual whose outstanding contributions strengthen education for children. This year’s Great Friend to Kid Award recipient is Dr. Jan Fitzsimmons whose life work has demonstrated a genuine commitment to all children.
Jan assures opportunities for historically underrepresented students to develop talents to their fullest intellectual, social, and creative potential. As president of Centers for Success, Jan empowers both pre-service college students in education and students in high-need schools in Chicago and Aurora to enjoy experiential education that provides access, resources, and opportunities.
Jan is kind and solution-focused with a heart-felt dedication to lifting up children in need by reducing barriers and providing access to meaningful learning opportunities. DCM is proud to call Jan our friend. CONGRATULATIONS and THANK YOU!

Chewing on books, opening and turning the pages, recognizing the illustrations, and discovering that there are words on the pages are all examples of early literacy. Developing language and literacy skills begins at birth through play and interactions like reading together, telling stories, singing songs, and talking together. If children are engaged and enjoying themselves, they are learning and developing positive feelings about reading and books. As your child grows, watch how their familiarity and interactions with books deepens. Help your child have a meaningful reading experience by letting them explore books in the ways that interest them.
No puppets at home? The show must go on! Say “encore!” to cardboard tubes and recycle them into fantastic finger puppets. Imagine, design, create, and put on a show! #playtolearnathome
Water play is a fun sensory experience for all ages. This simple activity engages toddlers in a fun challenge of moving objects across their midline, an important developmental skill that supports tasks like writing, putting on their shoes, etc. They will find so many interesting ways to play with the water and objects. Use simple water safe objects. You can explore texture and color as well. For extra stability you can tape down the bowls of water--but be mindful that this will not prevent explorers from experimenting with what happens if....? #playtolearnathome
Recognizing shapes and patterns is an essential math skill for young children. Try this easy, simple string art activity to practice creating geometric shapes! In this activity, children use their fine motor skills (strengthening the small muscles in their fingers and hands) and practice spatial visualization (supporting eye development). All you need is yarn, magnets, and a DIY board to get started! *Please note, this activity contains magnets and is not appropriate for children under the age of 3 years. Adult supervision is highly recommended. Music by Scandinavianz | Birds http://www.soundcloud.com/scandinavianz
Bring the outdoors in and paint with nature! Exploring natural materials helps children become familiar with mathematical concepts like textures, patterns, and colors. Try this activity together…
Music promotes children’s development in many ways! Choose songs that encourage children to use their imagination and engage in pretend play. Sing along with us!
Art offers children a unique opportunity to experiment, problem-solve, and express their emotions. Messy Art provides an active, sensory, and self-directed learning experience for children that promotes early brain development! Try painting with hands, feet, and/or interesting “tools” around your home or classroom such as, egg cartons, bubble wrap, plastic bottle caps, cotton balls, sponges, etc. Getting Started • Provide children a choice in selection of objects and tools used in the experience • Give children enough time to plan, prepare, and enjoy their art • Setup your environment for success and use old bed sheets, paper, or cardboard to protect furniture and flooring • Don’t forget to ask questions! Asking open-ended questions and writing children’s ideas develop important critical thinking, language, and literacy skills #PlaytoLearnatHome
Iggy Peck has one passion: architecture. He uses anything around the house to satisfy his insatiable passion for building… Even pancakes! What could you build with a pile of pancakes? Plan your visit. dupagechildrens.org/questioneers. #TheQuestioneers #IggyPeck #CUatDCM

It’s #NationalBananaBreadDay! Baking is an activity full of learning. Let’s make some banana bread with Alix and her helper to see the learning in action! With one recipe, they touch on math, science, language and literacy, social emotional, and physical development… not to mention have a delicious treat when they’re done :)
At first glance this activity may look like a fun way to practice balance and coordination, and indeed it is, but if you look at it through the eyes of a teacher you will see learning potential for math, social emotional, problem solving, critical thinking, and more! For an older child try approaching this like a three-dimensional Twister. As you direct your child through the maze they have to practice impulse control (social emotional) as they wait and pay attention to your instructions. Figuring out how to maneuver their bodies (balance and coordination) in order to complete the task as you directed requires mental flexibility, critical thinking, and possibly some problem solving. Finally, when rich descriptive language is used such as “step over the string in front of you and then put your body through the triangle next to you,” You are not only using math language but your child is experiencing that math with their whole body. When a child has the ability to experience these concepts as opposed to being passively taught them, they develop a deeper level of understanding. #playtolearnathome
Huskie Robotics Team 3061 is coming to DCM THIS Saturday, February 12 from 10am – 4pm! Come see demos of their super cool robot AND build and program LEGO robots with the team. Looking for an indoor art + math project for your child? Make an at-home stained glass window! This easy and fun activity fosters your child’s creativity and supports connections to symmetry and patterns. They can use a paintbrush or their fingers to practice fine motor skills. After you create, you can wipe down your window with a dishcloth and warm soapy water to remove the paint and you are ready to create again! #playtolearn #playtolearnathome
