The Battle of Okinawa ended on June 22, 1945, after nearly three months of intense and devastating combat between Allied and Japanese forces. It was the largest and bloodiest battle of the Pacific War, resulting in enormous casualties among both soldiers and civilians. Allied forces secured Okinawa, giving the United States a strategically vital base 350 miles from mainland Japan for air operations and a potential invasion staging area. The battle’s staggering human cost—more than 12,000 Americans killed and tens of thousands wounded, alongside heavy Japanese military losses and massive civilian deaths—deeply influenced Allied leaders. The fierce Japanese resistance and widespread destruction convinced many U.S. planners that an invasion of Japan would be extraordinarily costly, shaping decisions in the final months of the war and contributing to the move toward using atomic weapons and demanding Japan’s unconditional surrender.

Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR) was a U.S.-led international military campaign that began on June 15, 2014 (although it was not publicly named until later) to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria. The operation combined airstrikes, intelligence gathering, special operations, and the training and support of local partner forces. Its primary goal was to destroy ISIS’s territorial “caliphate” and prevent the group from threatening regional and global security. By 2019, ISIS had lost nearly all of the territory it once controlled, making the campaign a major military success in dismantling the group’s state-like control. However, ISIS survived as a smaller insurgent and terrorist network, so coalition counterterrorism and advisory efforts continued beyond the main combat phase.

According to official U.S. Defense Department casualty records, 122 American service members died in support of Operation Inherent Resolve as of late 2025. OIR had far fewer U.S. combat fatalities than earlier conflicts like Iraq or Afghanistan, largely because of airpower, special operations forces, and local partner troops rather than large-scale U.S. ground combat.

Women Veterans Day is observed on June 12th to mark the anniversary of the 1948 signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, which allowed women to serve as permanent, regular members of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Women served in every major American conflict (although often without formal recognition), since the Revolutionary War. Today, women serve in every branch of the U.S. military and hold positions as pilots, commanders, engineers, medics, and senior leaders.
