Artifact Spotlight: A Sword Made of Coins?

While exploring the collections at the Nampa Train Depot, we came across this intriguing object: a sword-shaped piece constructed from Chinese coins woven together with cord.

Known as a "coin sword" or "cash sword," similar objects have been found throughout China and were often associated with folk traditions and symbolism. Rather than serving as a weapon, these decorative swords were sometimes displayed in homes or businesses and were believed to offer protection, prosperity, or good fortune. The coins themselves were typically linked together with intricate knotwork, creating both a functional structure and an artistic design.

One of the most interesting aspects of museum work is that every artifact has a story, and sometimes that story is still waiting to be discovered. We are continuing to research this piece to learn more about its origins, age, and how it eventually found its way into the Depot's collection.

Step Back in Time at the Nampa Train Depot Car Show!

One of the highlights of this year's Harvest Festival Car Show on August 22, 2026 will be this stunning 1914 Mercer replica, which will be on display in front of the Nampa Train Depot from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Visitors will have the unique opportunity to sit in this beautiful vintage-style automobile and have their photo taken, creating a memorable keepsake from the day!

This family-friendly event will feature:
Approximately 50 classic and specialty vehicles
People's Choice voting for your favorite cars
Amazing trophies for competitors
Food vendors provided through the Nampa Farmers Market
Shopping opportunities with local vendors
Historic Train Depot exhibits and activities

We're also partnering with the Good News Bible Church Food Bank. Please consider bringing canned food donations to help support local families in need.

Whether you're a car enthusiast, history lover, shopper, or simply looking for a fun day out with the family, this is an event you won't want to miss!

Thanks to the Daughters of the American Revolution, Ee-Dah-How Chapter, visitors can still explore a special America 250 exhibit at the Depot featuring incredible artifacts, fascinating historical displays, and carefully crafted replicas that help bring our nation's story to life.

As we approach Independence Day, we invite you to stop by, reflect on our shared history, and celebrate the remarkable country we call home.
