Great news!

Construction of the new parking lot is underway at Warbird Park! Crews began working on this expansion earlier this week. The new lot will add 50 parking spaces upon completion, including handicap and bus parking. You can see the construction site along Farrow Parkway, just west of the park. There are no plans to close Warbird Park during construction.

Many restaurants and retailers are offering discounts and freebies over the Memorial Day weekend. Some of the deals are only for military personnel or veterans, while others are available to all. Some of the deals aren't specifically for Memorial Day, but they're good over the holiday weekend, so we will count them in as a way to enjoy the kick-off-to-summer holiday on the cheap.

Unity Memorial timeline captures the events of September 11…

Myrtle Beach will recognize the 20th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks with a ceremony at Warbird Park, the new home to the 9/11 Unity Memorial, at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 11. The public is invited to attend. The memorial was moved to Warbird Park from 29th Avenue North. In addition to a piece of steel beam from the North Tower of the World Trade Center, it includes the following timeline of events, engraved in granite in circles surrounding the memorial.

September 11, 2001, began as an idyllic day along the East Coast. Blue skies and pleasant temperatures held the promise of a beautiful day, but as millions of Americans began their morning, four airplanes – American Airlines Flight 11, United Airlines Flight 175, American Airlines Flight 77, and United Airlines Flight 93 – were hijacked by Islamic extremists, setting in motion the deadliest attacks ever on American soil.

8:19 a.m. – 9:28 a.m.: Four planes, American Airlines Flight 11, American Airlines Flight 77, United Airlines Flight 175 and American Airlines Flight 175 – are hijacked.

8:46:30: American Airlines Flight 11 crashes at roughly 466 m.p.h. into the north face of the North Tower of the World Trade Center, between floors 93 and 99.

9:03: United Flight 175 crashes at about 590 m.p.h. into the south face of the South Tower of the World Trade Center, between floors 77 and 85.

9:37: American Airlines Flight 77 crashes into the western side of the Pentagon and starts a violent fire.

9:59: The South Tower of the World Trade Center begins to collapse, 56 minutes and 2 second after the impact of Flight 175. Its destruction is viewed and heard by a vast television and radio audience.

10:03: United Airlines Flight 93 is crashed by its hijackers and passengers, due to fighting in the cockpit 80 miles southeast of Pittsburgh in Somerset County, Pa.

10:28:25: The North Tower of the World Trade Center begins to collapse. The second collapse is also viewed live on television and heard on radio. The North Tower collapses 1 hour, 41 minutes and 45 seconds after the impact of Flight 11.

10:50:19: Five stories of part of the Pentagon collapse due to the fire.

5:20: 7 World Trade Center, a 47-story building, collapses. Due to the emergency personnel having enough time to evacuate the building since the collapse of the North Tower, there are no injuries or deaths as a result of the collapse.

2,996 people died as a result of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Included among the dead were 343 FDNY firefighters, who rushed to the scene of the attacks in New York City and save countless lives.

A steel beam from the north tower of the World Trade Center has been reinstalled at the new location of the September 11 memorial, and that’s the subject of our Photos of the Week. Visit https://www.cityofmyrtlebeach.com/i_want_to/find/photos_of_the_week/pow082721.php for more images. The Unity Memorial will be more visible and accessible to the public in Myrtle Beach's Warbird Park.

Former New York firefighters who now call the Grand Strand “home” were on hand for the beam-setting. FDNY personnel who retired to Myrtle Beach donated the steel beam as a “thank you” to the local community for our support in the aftermath of the attacks. DDC Engineers provided the design work on the new memorial, while Stalvey Construction removed the elements from 29th Avenue North and successfully transferred them to Warbird Park on Farrow Parkway.

The memorial relocation is in time for the 20th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. The public is invited to attend the September 11 Remembrance Ceremony at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 11.
