Oak Street Art Fair is this Saturday, April 29th! Oak and 16th Street in Murphysboro from 10 to 5. Over 30 local artists, continual music on the Oakleaf bandstand, Hamps BBQ and Sweet Shish Kabob, the Alto Pass Winery, a children's tent and great artists! Rain or shine, we will have a great time!

I hope everyone will stop in today and give their best wishes to my neighbors at Gillenberg Furniture. They've been doing business on the square for decades! (I've been here for 31 years, but they had been there a long time before I showed up!) They deserve some home town attention! I challenge everyone to take a selfie while they are there and post it to the Murphy page or to Joe Summers's page.

I've enjoyed visits in the past couple of weeks from some of my old friends that I have made over the years because of exhibits at the gallery space. As you know, I've rearranged things and no longer have space for big exhibits and receptions, but there are two "tiny" exhibits gracing the space now. If you find yourself in the area, you might pop in and say "hi" and see two tiny exhibits--Larry Mittendorf's orchid paintings and two live orchids! and 7 John Havlik prints that Luca is going to help me hang later this month.

Two other events are happening today and tomorrow: The SIU school of architecture will meet local residents to discuss urban design ideas that can improve our downtown. This evening at the Davis-McCann center next to the Senior Citizens Center and tomorrow, the Unique Shops of Murphysboro and Tin Type Studio will host open houses.

If our town is filled with people JUST LIKE YOU, what kind of town will it be?

Thank you to all of the members of the Facebook community who stop in and check this page from time to time to see if there are any new artists exhibiting in my space. I rearranged my office layout and the gallery space is now occupied by employees and lobby furnishings. I rented my original office at 1004 Walnut to Lane Hudgins who is a professional economic analyst. She will make a great contribution to our downtown.

When I started hosting local artist exhibits in the windows of 1004 Walnut St. in 1986 (not a typo!!), I felt I helped create an interface between the public and the artists that was not happening anywhere else.

Now, there are many opportunities--notably, Anthill Gallery in Cobden, curated by Linda Austin and Bob Hagemen, the CCA space in Carbondale, all of the local wineries, and many local businesses.

The arts are alive and well in the area.
