The museum was established in 1961 and we continue to grow and excite the next generation. The Owyhee County Museum began in 1961 single item on display and has grown to a 10,000 square foot museum complex and research library that rests on one acre of land with five historic buildings. The Museum strives to preserve and educate future generations of Owyhee Counties history from Mining to Ranching.

Everyone here is deeply honored to receive a congressional record from the office of Senator Jim Rish.

During Outpost Days, Eriks presented this record to Mike Hanley and the family in the wagon barn. Thanks to Eriks connections with folks in Jim Risch‘s office he was able to acquire a special Congressional Record, recognizing the Owyhee County historical Museum in its endeavors to preserve the legacy of Idaho’s early founders and its history.

As Mr. Risch states, “thanks to their (museum) efforts, generations of Idaho will continue to learn and be inspired by our states history.”

We thank everyone who has helped so far with this project and we thank Mr. Risch’s office for doing this wonderful letter.

Yesterday the museum hosted the 2026 Idaho Mustang Camp. This was put on by the Owyhee county extension office. Kids came out and camped overnight and went out to find the wild horses we have here in the county.

They located some near Murphy and they also learned about the native grasses and the importance of managing these areas.

We enjoy partnering with groups like this as we get to highlight our museum and everyone gets to learn about the importance of this wonderful environment out here in Owyhee County.
