This Labor Day Monday, 9/5, 11AM -2PM, the Friendsofrhouse and Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society are offering a free dose of nature! This public event will feature taxidermy specimens, guided bird walks, a little bit of area history, and more.

The historic Rengstorff House sits atop Shoreline at Mountain View - Wildlife & Recreation Area, a wildlife and recreation area that also serves as a stop for many species of migratory birds.

We hope to see you there!

Did you know that and Shoreline at Mountain View sit on protected habitat along the Pacific Flyway, a north to south (and vice versa) migratory avian super highway? Today we're delighted to announce a collaboration with the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society for an educational event about birds with programming details to follow.

Some may not know that the Audubon conservation societies have been around since the late Victorian era. The first one founded in Massachusetts in 1896 was led by conservationists, Harriet Hemenway and Minna B. Hall, a pair of high society cousins. The two, in response to the massive hunting of birds for the feathers used in popular women's hat styling, worked to convince other society women to stop using feathered fashion over the pair's formal tea events.

RENGSTORFF HOUSE RETURNS!

The Rengstorff House acknowledged the important milestone of thirty years since the facility’s transformative restoration this past weekend. Approximately fifty guests were in attendance at the primarily outdoor, commemorative event featuring history displays, meet and greet opportunities with key restoration leaders, modified house tours and commemorative remarks by City Manager Kimbra McCarthy, Community Services Director John Marchant, Mayor Ellen Kamei, Friends of “R” House Board Secretary Martha Wallace and Friends’ President Tom McMahon. Key restoration leaders Glenn Lyles, Mark Rogge and members of the Board of the Friends of “R” House also played an important role in interpreting the past, as well as the vision for, the house.

Special thanks are extended to members of the Friends of “R” House, the Mountain View Historical Association, as well as members of the Parks & Recreation Commission, staff and elected officials (then and now), as they have played an important role in the ongoing care, upkeep, interpretation and outreach for the Rengstorff House since its celebrated opening in March of 1991.
