"The tranquil sunny haze, the clinging smoke, the v***r,
Spiritual, airy insects, humming on gossamer wings,
Shimmer of waters, with fish in them-- the cerulean above."
- Walt Whitman, "Warble for Lilac-Time"
When the unrelenting heat and humidity take hold each summer, this is the time to rely on plants that will enjoy all the rainforest feels. Using tropicals in the landscape is almost effortless here in the Charleston area as our growing zone ranges from 8b to 9a with some coastal pockets and barrier islands reaching 9b. With freezes being inevitable each winter, many subtropical and tropical plants do require protection in a greenhouse or cold frame or, alternatively, brought inside as a houseplant. Extended temperatures below 45°F can cause damage or death to their tender tissues. Many can perennialize and only require to be cutback at first frost. On the other hand, during the spring, summer, and autumn seasons tropical plants will thrive and keep the landscape looking colorful, festive, and lush.
