William Stuart Seeley House / Relic Home Museum

Mount Pleasant Utah’s First House

Built c. 1861, this house is significant as the reported site of the signing, in September 1872, of the final peace treaty that ended the Black Hawk War between Mormon settlers and Indians in the area. William S. Seeley was prominent in the establishment and subsequent growth of the City of Mt. Pleasant, serving for nearly thirty years as the LDS Bishop in the community and concurrently as mayor for a total of seven years. Seeley lived in this house, reportedly the first built outside the walls of the pioneer fort, until his death in 1895.

The house is also significant as a well-preserved example of the central passage plan, a house type common in Utah from 1847 to 1900 but relatively rare in Mt. Pleasant. The rear additions were built c, 1880 and c, 1910. While the house has been covered with stucco, as was common with many adobe buildings, it is significant as one of the oldest and best preserved pioneer era structures in Mt. Pleasant.

Have you met or Walk With the Dead Tour Guide? Her name is Hilda Madsen Longsdorf

Hello, friends. My name is Hilda Madsen Longsdorf, and if you've ever wondered why Mount Pleasant remembers its past so well, I hope I had a small part in that.
I was born here in 1877, the youngest of ten children. As a young woman I clerked in my family's stores, worked as a telephone operator in Scofield, and even rode horseback the thirty-five miles between Scofield and Mount Pleasant just to visit family and friends. But my greatest love was preserving our history. When the Mt. Pleasant Pioneer Historical Association was organized in 1909, I became its very first secretary and served for thirty-seven years. I spent countless hours researching journals, gathering stories, and protecting precious relics so they would remain here in our hometown. In 1939, I completed the book Mt. Pleasant, helping preserve the stories of our pioneers for future generations.
History wasn't my only joy. I loved flowers, parties, practical jokes, and especially Christmas. Dressed as Mrs. Santa Claus, I rang sleigh bells through town, leaving treats for children and a little Christmas magic wherever I went. If you remember Mount Pleasant's history, celebrate its pioneers, or smile at an old Christmas tradition, then a little piece of my life's work is still living on.

We are grateful for all her hard work and we are excited to have her back as our tour guide!
