House of Cedar, 1800 at Red Rhode Farm

House of Cedar, 1800 at Red Rhode Farm House of Cedar, 1800, is a farmhouse built in 1800. Site of a prominent former mule-trading business, now my earthly haven.

She's a rare piece of living history, with many stories still to tell. Site of a prominent former mule-trading business, now home to a few humans, a couple of dogs and cats, several ornery chickens, with a handful of entertaining ducks. Also host of several music videos and photo shoots!

We broke down and hired painters to finish painting our 200-year old farmhouse.

Meanwhile, we're working on some renovations and chores before winter sets in.

Our drive through the country to get feed was rainy, but peaceful.

And Lata, our Pyrenees and livestock guardian dog is really coming into her own as my personal assistant!

Once upon a dark night, Guardian Puppy Lata was keeping watch over her flock, when out of the corner of her very focused eye, she observed the Dreaded Radish Monster‼️‼️🤯🤯🤯

Concerned, she bravely tackled the mean old monster, and gummed it 'til its reddish/purple flesh was all but gone.

Still. Wanting to warn away any other scary radish monsters, she felt she needed to do more.

Even though the brave guardian pup was still very 'puppy stupid,' she did what she thought was a very smart thing: She drug the menace all the way from Mother's Garden where she'd found it... all the way to West 615 (the other side of her yard).

Exhausted from all this protection work, and with dawn--and Mother Farmer coming on, she summoned all her remaining strength. Digging furiously, she intended to bury what was left of the flock menace.

Paw-full by paw-full, she dug ... until she had a 12-inch deep hole.🧐

However, she got distracted and quite forgot what she was doing--leaving Mr. Radish in all his nakedness a few feet from his eternal compost haven.

Nevertheless, when the farmer appeared, the great Muddy White Puppy was satisfied, knowing she had saved her flock from great harm.

From the very large radish.

That was now mostly naked, and limply lying nearby.

The End.

A Tuesday Story

Cats aren't my animal of choice.

However, they're a necessity here to keep the field mice at bay.

We have had a very good cat in the past. We also have a pretty sweet cat now.

Then there is Murdock.

Murdock is the world's most annoying cat. He's the very reason I don't enjoy cats.

And I remind him of this fact daily.

Because every time I head to the house from the chicken pen, there is Murdock ... always getting in front of me, relentlessly holding that lead position, and always always In. My. Way.

I tell him, "If you look up ANNOYING in the dictionary, there will be a picture of you."

Undeterred, he continues to annoy ... I mean "lead" me.

This morning, as I struggled with him being underfoot and in my way, I asked ... "Why??? Are you afraid a wild animal is going to attack me? As if you'd actually save me from a random animal assault."

Just as I muttered this, there was a startling commotion.

I trained my eyes upward, where the noise was coming from, and lo, a squirrel had scampered up the tin roof of the shed. Just as I spotted him, the squirrel leapt from the shed to the roof of the garage, and ran up and over ... away, and out of sight.

At that exact moment (this all happened very fast), Murdock looked back at me and said, "See? You're welcome, my liege."

Me thinks he thinks of himself a bit too highly.

The end.
