𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗶𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗷𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘆 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗱 𝗩 𝗼𝗳 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝘆

With news of King Harald V of Norway’s recent passing, we wanted to pay tribute to his memory by sharing this image from his October 1965 visit to Mount Horeb, when he was Crown Prince Harald. In this Lyle Johnson photograph, Crown Prince Harald, pictured on the left, is greeted by Sigvart Nygaard, J.B. Johnson, and Village President Curtis Witte whose back is to the camera. According to an October 7, 1965, article in the 𝘔𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵 𝘏𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘣 𝘔𝘢𝘪𝘭, President Witte and his wife, along with members of the Village Board and Chamber of Commerce, formally welcomed him to Mount Horeb and presented him with a cufflink and tie clasp set. Crown Prince Harald gave a brief speech to residents before continuing to Little Norway for a tour as the guest of UW-Madison Professor Emeritus Ashor H. Hobson and his wife.

This 1949 interior photo of Zwald’s Appliance Center shows Regina Zwald standing near a display of radios and record player consoles. Located at 105 E. Main Street in Mount Horeb, the store sold everything from lighting fixtures to refrigerators and the company remained in business into the 1980s. Do you remember shopping at Zwald’s?

Thanks to the members of the Sognefjordlag who visited the Driftless Historium on August 13 as part of their annual stemne (meeting) held in Mount Horeb this year! Their visit to the museum included a guided tour and special presentation by Brian Bigler entitled “A Well-Traveled Building: The Norway Building of the 1893 World’s Fair.”

Visit www.sognefjordlag.com to learn more about this organization of descendants from the Sognefjord district of Norway living in the US and Canada including members living in Norway. The group promotes interest in Norwegian folk art and folklore and works to strengthen the cultural and social connections between immigrants from the Sogn region of Norway and their descendants.

Visit this FREE special exhibit, created in collaboration with the Mount Horeb Area School District showcasing how family legacy and local education intertwine in Mount Horeb!

𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗺 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲!👏👏
Thank you to Luke Nolan who completed his practicum project this week at the Mount Horeb Area Historical Society! A graduate student in UW-Madison’s Library & Information Studies MA program, Luke is interested in working in a museum after graduation. He focused his project on the MHAHS' collection of framed original artwork because he wanted professional hands-on work experience in digital curation and preservation. Over the summer, he updated the museum’s collection records in PastPerfect with additional research, thorough documentation, and photographs of each work of art. We appreciate your hardwork and wish you the best of luck completing your studies next year!

⛽⛽⛽𝗠𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗵𝘆’𝘀 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 was located on the corner of Springdale Street and 78 North in Mount Horeb. It was operated by William Murphy (1898-1969) and his family from 1925 into the early 1950s. According to a 1978 article in 𝘈𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥, Murphy, who was blind, used "computing" gas pumps with bells that sounded for each gallon, helping him avoid overfilling gas tanks.

Summer campers traveled through time while visiting the Driftless Historium today. Activities included an exhibit scavenger hunt to locate objects dating from the 1700s to the present; playing old-fashioned games like jacks, marbles, and hopscotch; crafting their own 1970s pet rock; and dancing the twist with 𝘓𝘢𝘶𝘨𝘩-𝘐𝘯 style jokes from the 1960s TV show! Thanks so much for including a visit to the Driftless Historium as part of your 𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘴 summer camp theme!
