Before Route 72.
Before Route 117.
Before most people even owned automobiles.

Visitors arrived in Mount Gretna by train, then explored the community on foot — or, for a time, rode a narrow gauge railroad toward the grand Hotel Conewago, the National Guard Rifle Range, and on to the summit of Governor Dick.

Today it’s easy to overlook just how innovative and connected this little woodland community was in its early days.

Join the Mount Gretna Area Historical Society for the first guided walking tour of the season and discover some of the stories still hiding in plain sight around the Pennsylvania Chautauqua grounds.

📍 Meet at the Visitor Information Center
🕰 TODAY, May, 24th, at 1pm (tour is approximately 1 hour)

2026 Opening weekend is here!!

We encourage you to pop in and see what we are all about...brush up on your Mt Gretna History, browse our growing booklet series, sit on the porch and soak in how this magical place came to be.

Don't miss this year's display featuring "The Women of early Mt Gretna" and the "Farmers Encampment&Mount Gretna Park"

We have a beautiful bench donated by the Johnson family in memory of Redd Dixon. Co-founder of the Mt Gretna Art Show.

Reed passed away on Art Show weekend in 2025.

The Mount Gretna Historical Society, like the majority of organizations in Mt Gretna, is alive and well due to the amazing volunteers and generous donations. We thank you for your continued support!!
