The original Siamese Twins, Chang and Eng Bunker, settled down and raised a family in Mount Airy, North Carolina, just before the American Civil War. Many of their descendants still live in the area, including one who developed a museum dedicated to telling their story.

This full-length portrait of the twins was painted in oil by John Irvine and completed circa 1830, during their first visit to England.

This painting is a part of the special collections at the Hunterian Museum at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

From April 1853 to March 1854, the twins set out on another tour with their children, Kate and Christopher. During this journey, they made 130 stops across the Northeast, Nova Scotia, and Quebec, traveling roughly 4,700 miles. In a booklet released alongside the tour, they explained their motivation, noting that “to educate a large family thoroughly requires a considerable expenditure of money.”
