Learn about Labors on the Frontier this Saturday through Monday, September 5-7, 2026.

Join us on on an exploration of the labors and leisure on an 1840s frontier post. Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., enjoy a variety of living history demonstrations as you explore the labors on the fort. Monday will be Artillery demonstrations at 9, 10, and 11 a.m.

Visit with an officer’s wife practicing needlepoint, a laundress doing laundry, learn about caring for your horse from a Dragoon soldier, log hewing with an infantry soldier, and join ranger guided tours at 1:00 p.m. All programs are free and open to the public.

Freedom Festival 2026 is fast approaching!! Our one day event will be filled with fun for all ages! Our new additions are camp tours, storytelling by the campfire, and ending ceremony of Taps and breathtaking night cannon firing!!

Great turnout at our quarterly meeting last night! Thank you to everyone who attended!

We’re working hard on obtaining grants to restore the Warzel house to it’s original layout; installation of a parking lot in the north east side of the park; and repairs to the front sidewalk and drainage issues (in conjunction with the city and KDOT).

Also heard reports on the success of the park’s first year of our education program. The program brought in approximately 300 students from multiple school districts to learn about our town’s history and involvement in the Underground Railroad. Planning for bringing in even more students and schools is already underway for this school year.

We also discussed fundraising ideas, potential programs and classes, as well as upcoming events.

President Ron Nickelson presented high school student Gabe Ross with a certificate of appreciation for his participation in last year’s school education program.

After the business portion of the meeting, attendees were treated to presentations by Dana Enloe, Gabe Ross, David Nickelson, and Bill Jordan, portraying various historical figures.

Last but certainly not least, we have several big events coming up in the next few months. If you’re interested in volunteering-in any capacity-please don’t hesitate in reaching out to us!

When the Sun Failed to Shine!

The Kansas Dust Bowl was a severe environmental and agricultural disaster during the 1930s, primarily impacting western Kansas and the wider Southern Great Plains. Decades of intensive wheat farming and the removal of native prairie grasses, combined with a multi-year drought and high winds, turned the topsoil into massive, choking "black blizzards".

Please join us at the Miami County Kansas Historical Museum on August 15 for an hour of learning about this catastrophic event that affected our grandparents, parents, and maybe us.

No Admittance Fee
Donations Very Welcome

The museum is a 501(C)(3) not-for-profit organization.
