Do you remember when the now Baker House was moved across Routes 22 & 3? This Little Miami Express article from July 16, 1979 describes the plan to move the house because of the expanding gravel pit.

We have always heard the house referred to as the Fleischmann House. The Fleischmann family pioneered the mass production of yeast and the creation of margarine.

What do you know about the history of the house or the Fleischmann family in Morrow?

This photo was a recent donation from Joyce Demitt. This shows a group of men who traveled by train across the country to various shooting events organized by Joyce’s father-in-law, Clarence Demitt. John Philip Sousa would often attend these events. Clarence Demitt is the 4th person from the left in the back row and we believe John Philip Sousa is on the far right, back row. Joyce was told that either Procter or Gamble would often attend.

Do you recognize anyone in this photo or know anything about these events?

We were thrilled to welcome Russell Craig and his sister Donna Craig-Jordan for a visit to our History Center last week. Both graduated from Morrow High School and are members of our organization. Marlene Schwartz-DeBoard has known them since their time in school together and showed them around our History Center. The three of them had a wonderful time catching up with each other!

The Maineville Academy opened to students on September 25, 1848. The first teacher was John W. F. Foster. The Academy drew students from the larger area and many arrived to school by train and used the boardwalk to walk up the hill from the Foster’s Crossing train station to the school. The most famous graduate was The Hon. Benjamin Butterworth, who was a member of Congress (1879-1883). In 1874 it became part of the public school system known as the Maineville Special District. We believe this building was located near the old fire station, now Evofit. Photo and information from “A Pictorial History of the Maineville Crossroads”.

Can you imagine walking on a boardwalk between Fosters and Maineville?

This is a picture of Tate Kelley in the grocery store his family operated in Roachester. The picture was taken December 1938. This store closed sometime in the 1970’s. At one point there were two other grocery stores in Roachester. Can you name these stores? Do you have memories shopping at them?

Our 2024 ornament is of Harlan-Butlerville Elementary. When this school opened in 1939 it brought together students from surrounding smaller schools including Middleboro. If you look closely at this 1903 map of Middleboro it shows the school lot at the very top of the map (click on the photo to see the complete map). Do you know if the school is still standing, perhaps as someone’s home? The road marked “Turnpike Street” is now State Route 132 and the one marked “Morrow & Blanchester Road” is now Middleboro Road.

Our ornaments can be ordered on our website LittleMiamiHistory.org.

Did you guess our 2024 ornament? It’s Harlan-Butlerville Elementary! This building is beloved by many and adds another area school to our ornament collection.

The building opened to students on February 1, 1939 and brought together students from 4 smaller schools (Butlerville, Middleboro, Level and New Hope). Originally the building contained seven classrooms, an auditorium, lunchroom, and inside restrooms (a first for most of the students). The Principal’s Office was in the upstairs ‘tower room’.

You can purchase this ornament and past ornaments on our website, LittleMiamiHistory.org, or in person at our History Center in Maineville Elementary on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 10:00-2:00. Thanks for supporting local history!

In case you haven’t heard, the Warren County Genealogical Society has been scanning the Western Star newspapers and putting them online. So far, they have added papers from 1807-1988. You can find the newspapers at www.wcgsohio.org to research events or reminisce about some wonderful history in our area.

To complete the collection, the Genealogical Society is looking for missing copies of the newspaper. If you have any, please visit their website to see a list of issues they are missing. You can also financially donate to support this amazing project. Thank you for supporting local history!

As kids are going back to school our thoughts also are on schools. Here is a photo of the Gum Grove School which was recently torn down. It was located on Gum Grove Road, just north of Routes 22 & 3. It’s always sad to lose historic structures.

On a positive note, we’re happy to report that our Christmas ornament this year will be of Harlan-Butlerville Elementary. This will add to our collection of school ornaments. We will let you know when they are available!

We send our best wishes for a wonderful school year to all the students, teachers and staff!

Happy Times Farm was located where the Classicway neighborhood is now located (access was on Ford Road). It was the only fully covered half-mile all weather training track in the US. The name later changed to Classicway Farm. A quote from Blood-Horse Magazine is, “You put the seal of quality on your horse when you send him to Happy Times Farm. The Track that trains the winners.”

This photo is taken from a postcard and list the photographer as Rob Paris.

This is the map of Middleboro from the 1875 Warren County Atlas. The road labeled “Turnpike” is now State Route 132 and we believe the main crossroad is now Middleboro Road. The village was laid out in 1838 by George Bowman and seemed to have originally been spelled “Middleborough”. We have records indicating there once was a school in the village and, in the 1880’s, there were two stores. Does anyone have information about these or know where they were located?
