“North of Abiquiu” 8 x 8 oil. Available. This little painting was a savior of sorts. I drove to Oklahoma for the NatureWorks art show in March, by myself, very dizzy from Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss. Probably not my best decision ever but I committed and wanted to test myself. I planned extra time and made it fine with a lot more stops than I normally would take. The show was a bust so I decided to go home through Santa Fe, take my time and see some country I haven’t been to in a while. I love that part of the West, especially Taos. On the way home I drove past Abiquiu, NM, where Georgia O’Keefe had her studio. The sun was going down and just lit up this little spire. I hit the brakes and took some shots on my phone. When I got home I struggled with painting, dizziness, doubt and stamina were getting the best of me. I remembered these photos and decided to give it a go. I am pretty happy with the results and this little painting sort of slapped me out of my stupor. Hope you like it!

Oh how I love mountain lions and yet, they make me very nervous when I run into one in the wild. I have had a few experiences with wild cats and captive ones, luckily nothing too scary. We also have our own little Main C**n devil at our house. It never ceases to amaze me how the little cats act like their bigger cousins, therefore the healthy respect for the wild ones.

“Dixon Country” 16 X 20. Available. As I have been dealing with my new hearing loss, I decided to pull back from wildlife a little and focus on some smaller landscapes. This is a scene down by Mt. Carmel, Utah, not far from Maynard Dixon’s former studio. In April, my wife and son ran the Zion 60k trail race. It was just shy of 40 miles. I am no longer a “runner” so I have become the driver for my wife on her crazy adventures. Anyway, that distance takes some time to complete, especially for undertrained runners, so I went for a drive and ended up at Dixons’s old place enjoying what Paul and Susan Bingham have turned it into. What a wonderful gallery. On the drive between Kanab and Mt Carmel, The light was perfect for a dramatic painting of Southern Utah. Hope you enjoy.

“Soon Comes the Sun” 12 x 12 oil on board. Available. It has been a while since I posted new art. I haven’t stopped painting….I have been dealing with some semi major changes in my life and honestly, I’m not sure the best way to talk about it so here goes: in early January, on a random Friday morning and with no warning, I woke up to complete hearing loss in my right ear and vertigo/dizziness (not entirely sure of the difference). Turns out it is called Sudden Sensorineural hearing loss and is not too uncommon. I went through the treatments to no effect. For a month I didn’t go anywhere but to the ENT and church. I Didn’t dare drive since I felt drunk when I stood up. Gradually it has been getting better, the dizziness, not so much on the hearing side of things. I am back painting more consistently now, and the work is good. I hope you enjoy this one, it was fun to paint. I will be posting more in the near future in order to catch up on the work I have created since my hearing loss. If we are ever in the same room, please stand on my left side so we can have a good conversation. I know we are all dealing with something and don’t want this to be a ploy for sympathy, just information about my absense. I am navigating this murky water the best I can and will get better. God Bless.
