We are excited to announce our 2026 Veterans Day Programs and essay contests. The Veterans Foundation and the Rowan County School District have been partners in this event for nearly 30 years. This year we celebrate our country's 250th anniversary and we decided to get an early start on planning to provide the students with the topic and prompts before summer break. We also are pleased to double the awards for this year. The American Legion, Post 126, normally provides the monetary awards with the Jack Ellis Foundation contributing to Rowan County Senior High School. Total awards last year for the Rowan District, Farmers Christian and Lakeside Academy was approximately $2000. This year we were fortunate to obtain a $1000 grant secured by County Judge Executive Harry Clarke and a generous donation of $1000 by the Via Delarosa Recovery Center and the awards will be $4000.

The following is the topic and writing prompts. If you are a student or the parent of a student, please consider participating in this fall event. Last year we had over 1000 student essays!

Celebrating a Quarter Millennium of American Exceptionalism

The phrase American Exceptionalism is often invoked casually or dismissed reflexively to describe this revolutionary idea and the grand experiment in self-government that followed. But in this year marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, it is incumbent upon all American to probe deeper into that concept.
What precisely makes America exception? What distinguishes it not only in rhetoric, but in structure, endurance, and consequence.

Elementary writing prompt:
What does Freedom mean to you?

Middle School prompt:
The Declaration of Independence articulated America’s founding principles and the Constitution secured them. Discuss how these documents formed the republic and freedom we enjoy today.

High School writing prompts.
The Constitution is the oldest written national constitution still in force. It is also one of the shortest governing charters in the world. Why has this document been so enduring compared to others in history.
Today, 250 years after 1776, the question is not whether American has been perfect. No nation is. The question is whether we understand the great blessings that we have inherited, and whether we possess the moral fiber and civic stamina required to preserve it. What is your vision for the future of the United States? *
