Great art!
Dear Rourke, Today I brought four young, new Americans to the Rourke for their first visit. The front desk staff enthusiastically told us what to expect in the galleries and gave friendly tips on museum etiquette, which was extremely helpful for my young friends. We all ADORED the “Zeitgeist” exhibit! It led to some fantastic discussions about virtually everything under the sun from asking “What is art?” at Erika Frank’s “Ground” to answering the question “But why do Nazis spray paint that symbol?” at Chris Mortenson’s “Uncomfortably Familiar,” but my absolute favorite conversation centered around this piece. In the excited discussion this light-up “EMPATHY” sign prompted, I foolishly neglected to note the artist and title. If you are able to contact them, would you please pass along the following conversation: 9 year old: What does this one say? 11 year old, maybe not at a “museum-appropriate” volume: Oh, wow! It says “EMPATHY!” My teacher would love this one! She talks about empathy all the time! Me, impressed as all get out: She does? 11 year old: Yeah! She tells us how important it is! 9 year old: What’s empathy? 10 year old, knowingly: The counselor at my school came and talked to my class about it. She said it’s caring about other people. 9 year old: Like, being sad and happy and angry and feelings and stuff? Me: It’s more like, you care about what happens to other people, even if what they’re going through has never happened to you. You care about them anyway. That’s empathy. 9 year old: Oh, yeah. That’s really important. Cuz, like, you GOTTA care about people. 10 year old: Yeah, like the lady [presumably the counselor,] said: “Even if they’re different or whatever. People are still PEOPLE.” 12 year old, with an enormous smile as they gazed at the sign: I like this one! Me, trying not to fully lose my composure in public: Me, too. Me, too. In these tumultuous times, I cannot think of a more important conversation for young people to be having. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
My next exhibition “Northern Plains Native Americans: A Personal Collection” is scheduled for August 25th at The Rourke Museum in Moorhead, Minnesota. This collection of 28 plates are from my own collection and this is the first time they will be shown to the public. August 25th, 6pm for opening, social, talk and wet plate demonstration. Anyone in the Fargo area please share and attend.
Msum is having a photojournalism show also. Was this a coordinated effort?
I miss all you Rourkies. We will be back soon.
"The King Has Fallen" a wet plate photograph is being submitted to the 59th Midwestern Invitational Exhibition of Fine Art - Camelot Revisited. June 18th through September 2nd, 2018. 11x14" glass print from original wet plate ambrotype of Corey Bloom. http://sharoncol.balkowitsch.com/wetplate.htm
Do you know of a Pat Rourke from Illinois my moms (glayds koster leali) friend?
Is NPR broadcasting live from the Rourke tomorrow? (9-28) You must be excited!
you got email?
I am sorry to post that Mary Hieberg Larson died after a long battle with Parkinsons. Mary was the wife of Terry Larson. I am sure many of you are familiar with his welded steel sculptures that are often displayed at The Rourke. Both Terry and Mary attended Concordia and were very early supporters of Rourke Gallery. They have lived in Seattle for the past several years. If anyone would like Terry's contact information they may contact me through my page. RIP Mary.
Very excited for the show! Many thanks to the Rourke Art Museum. Look forward to seeing and meeting you all this weekend.
