Wow, that was fast.

It feels like Houston Llew’s 1776 was just introduced, and already it’s time for this very special Spiritile to retire on Labor Day.

Lady Liberty. So much meaning in one small piece.

We have just a few remaining at $250. After retirement, any remaining pieces increase to $300.

Meet Nancy Hilliard Joyce

Nancy creates from her home studio in Concord, NC, but her story as an artist has taken her much farther.

She spent nearly a decade in Asheville’s River Arts District, later curated art for The Grove Park Inn and boutique hotels throughout the Southeast, and has created large-scale commissions for public spaces. Her work has appeared in Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, Southern Living, The Wall Street Journal and House & Garden UK and is collected around the world.

Her paintings are deeply connected to nature, memory and place. She works in layers, combining gold leaf, graphite, collage, oils and acrylics, often bringing birds and botanicals into the story.

And there’s another part of Nancy we appreciate. She gives back, supporting environmental initiatives, women’s causes and children in need, while also serving the arts community.

We’ll be introducing you to a few of Nancy’s pieces this week, but first, we thought you should get to know the woman behind them.

We’re delighted to welcome Nancy Hilliard Joyce to Juelerye

Look closer. There’s a reason for almost everything you see.

The Nancy Joyce piece we chose for our home is titled Another Reason.

And once I learned the story behind it, I appreciated it even more.

Layers of paint create different planes symbolizing our past, present and future.

And then there are the threes.

Three butterflies. A 3-cent stamp.
Three realms of nature.

Together, they create a visual story, inviting us to think about the impact our actions have through time.

I had looked at this painting many times before knowing its full story.

Now I see something different every time I pass it.

Maybe that’s one of the best things art can do. Make you look again.

This one didn’t stay with us for long.

Perhaps it was the flash of ruby against emerald green.

Perhaps it was the way the artist Vanessa Thorman captured a bird that always seems to arrive like a tiny bit of magic.

This original watercolor of a Ruby-throated Hummingbird was painted on cold-pressed paper, surrounded by a midnight green mat, and finished in a bronze Italian wood frame.

Beautifully created. Beautifully presented.

And now, sold.

The right piece of art has a way of finding the person who feels something when they see it.

What do hummingbirds symbolize for you?

WE BROUGHT IT HOME

Sometimes you discover an artist whose work you don’t just want for the gallery. You want to live with it.

A couple of months ago, Nelson and I first saw this piece.

We both fell in love with it.

There was only one problem. We didn’t have a place for it.

Eventually, we decided to move another beautiful piece of art to a new spot and make room for this one.

And I’m so glad we did.

It’s now hanging in our home, and I find myself noticing something different every time I look at it.

The artist is Nancy Joyce and I’m very excited to finally share that Nancy will soon be joining us at Juelerye.

There’s much more to tell about Nancy and this particular piece.

But for today, I simply wanted to introduce you the same way we were introduced to her.

Through the art.

There’s a pretty special piece in our gallery right now. ❤️

This summer, middle school students from Crosby Scholars Iredell County spent time with us, Mooresville Arts and Four Corners Framing learning about careers in the arts.

The piece they created was inspired by the idea of bringing many individual works of art together to tell one larger story, similar to the concept behind the Houston Llew spiritiles you see in our gallery. Each student created their own individual piece, and together they became the artwork you see here.

I love what it represents. Different ideas, different hands and different perspectives, all coming together as one.

Stop in and see it while it’s here. It’s even more special when you know the story behind it. ❤️

My parents were from this area, and I have such fond memories of coming here as a child. At the time, of course, I had no idea where life would eventually take me.

Who would have known that all these years later, I would own a gallery filled with the work of incredibly talented artists and have such a deep appreciation for things made by hand?

There’s something pretty special about looking back and realizing that perhaps some of the things that become important to us later in life were quietly being planted long before we ever knew it.

Funny how life comes full circle.

On a 400-acre mountaintop near Bakersville, Penland School of Craft has been teaching regular people to blow glass, throw clay, and hammer iron since 1929, and you don't have to be an artist to spend a weekend there with your own two hands in the fire.
