Why do we tell these stories?

Because history isn't just about buildings and dates.

It's about the people who built businesses, raised families, worked the railroad, ranched the land, served their communities and helped make Moorcroft what it is today.

The Historic Walking Tour helps make those stories visible again. We will not be walking to this location, but old photos tell stories - Rodeo at Devils Tower!

The Belle Fourche River: Then & Now

Today, the Belle Fourche River flowing through Moorcroft is little more than a trickle. 💧 With the drought we’re experiencing, it’s hard to imagine this waterway as the powerful river it once was.

But back in the day, the Belle Fourche River was a major part of life in this area. It provided water, supported wildlife, shaped the landscape, and played an important role in the settlement and growth of communities like Moorcroft.

It’s a good reminder that the landscape we see today hasn’t always looked the same. The river has a story—and it’s one worth remembering. 🌾

📸 What do you remember about the Belle Fourche River? Do you have an old photo, story, or memory of the river to share?

I by no means think all of those photos are in Moorcroft. Just showing how large the river once was!
