A blast from the past: Many will remember the Williams Super-Valu Supermarket on east High Street. Fewer will remember his earlier grocery on the ground floor of the old Columbia Hotel building. Owner, Tom Williams, is pictured here with an employee inside his High Street store and outside his Woodlawn Drive home behind the wheel of his 1931 Ford Model A delivery wagon.

Tom Savage of HARF/ Hoosier Auto Racing Fans writes about a Montpelier Speedway Memory:

Montpelier Speedway a big old half miler back in the 1950's and I was there in 1952--1953 for a wild afternoon of stock car racing. Things got wild early when the sound system hanging from a tree branch shorted out and caused a quick flash of fire and then got serious with a opening lap crash. Don't remember the drivers name but his racer was a 1940 Studebaker coupe and he roared into the first turn on the first lap and performed a couple of quick flips and then pole vaulted halfway up a giant tree on the outside of the track. Fans gasped and the driver climbed from his racer and slowly slithered down the tree uninjured and the good sized crowd roared with applause. After the car was trimmed and lowered to the ground the race got underway again and made it to the third turn on the opening lap before a pair of coupe stock cars got upside down and on the side. Bill Holloway was the car that was laying on its side and he was righted and pushed off and allowed to have his original pole position for the restart? Restarted once again the pack of cars roared down the back stretch before a dust cloud showed Holloway and the 2 car on its side once again. Restarted again and Holloway again getting his original starting spot back after two flips? and this time Bill Holloway drove to a winning finish 25 laps later. Probably the only time in auto racing that a feature event featured a car in a tree and the winning car was upside down twice and still won the feature.

(He includes this photo which shows the PA speaker in the tree.)

Bryon Maddox and Charlie Stepp accept a generous donation from Lynn Elliott of the Wells County Historical Society.
The donation was a silver spoon bearing the image of the Main Street High School. The location of that school was very close to where the Montpelier Historical Society is located in the Old Church Museum.
