Next time you're in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, make sure to visit "The Honking Tunnel" in St. Johnsbury, one of the public artworks throughout the state that were supported by a Vermont Arts Council Animating Infrastructure Grant. Lighted sculptures by artist Clay Mohrman were installed in the tunnel connecting Bay Street to Depot Square, illuminating the tunnel area and encouraging pedestrians to explore in safety.

Just one example of abundant public art in Southern Vermont is "Quilted Paintings; Kinetic Sculptures 'Differentia Opinionis' and 'Unanimous'" at the Superior Court and State Office buildings in Bennington, supported by a Vermont Arts Council Art in State Buildings Grant.

The work combines Vermont landscapes, architectural elements of the building, and graceful symmetry to honor both employee dedication and the local community. This building contains quilted paintings in the lobbies & stairwell by Jerri Finch as well as exterior kinetic sculptures by Gordon Auchincloss.

Mosaic artist Mary Tapogna has transformed the staircase leading to Downstreet's Ward 5 School Apartments in Barre into a vibrant work of public art.

Funded by the The Vermont Arts Council's Animating Infrastructure grant, Mary’s work celebrates the history, people, and character of the Ward 5 neighborhood. Neighbors, friends, collaborators, and community members are invited to meet the artist and view the completed mural on Wednesday, August 19, at 2:00pm at the Ward 5 School Apartments staircase at 5 Humbert St.
