A few weeks ago at our annual picnic, the General John Burrows Historical Society had the privilege of honoring two very special people from Montoursville.

First, we honored the life of Maynard Bogart, an integral part of the GJBHS for many, many years. Maynard served as a board member for numerous years before servings as President from 2008–2022. He dedicated countless hours and Tuesday afternoons for the success of our museum.

So much of what visitors see today exists because of Maynard’s hard work. From helping renovate the museum, setting up displays of artifacts, managing finances, and making sure we are positioned for a strong future, Maynard gave his time, talents, and heart to this organization. We are incredibly grateful for everything he did for the GJBHS.

We were also thrilled to present this year’s GJBHS Annual Scholarship to Emma Hollenbach!

Emma was selected by our Board of Directors as this year’s scholarship recipient for her winning essay on why knowing and preserving Montoursville’s history is important. Her thoughtful words demonstrated a wonderful appreciation for the community and its past.

Emma currently works at The Meadows while taking a gap year to explore her interests, consider her future plans, and prepare for the next chapter of her education and career.

Congratulations, Emma! We are proud to support you as you take this time to discover what comes next. We wish you all the best in your future endeavors!

🇺🇸America 250 Trivia Night Recap! 🇺🇸

What a night! We had about 8 teams join us for a night filled with fun, knowledge, food, and plenty of laughs—and we had an absolute blast!

A special shout-out to our winners:

🥇 Montoursville 4 Life — They absolutely crushed it, including a perfect score in the US Landmarks round! 👏

🥈 Sherlock Homies — A team of five —and half half of them are smart Montoursville Area School District students who definitely showed off their skills! 📚

🥉 The Dynamic Duo — Two smart brains, one impressive score, and a whole lot of laughs all night long! 😂

We have officially discovered that the GJBHS loves hosting trivia at Trifecta! Another game is already being brainstormed…

Now we just have to convince President Mark to let us do it again this year. Apparently, he insists he only hosts two trivia nights a year. We think he may need to reconsider that policy. 😉

Thank you to everyone who came out and made America 250 Trivia such a fun night! Stay tuned… there may be another battle of the brains coming soon!

Today, we pause to remember the 21 members of our Montoursville community who lost their lives on TWA Flight 800 thirty years ago. Though three decades have passed, they are never forgotten. Their lives, their stories, and the love they shared with their families and friends remain forever woven into the fabric of our community.

Please join us tomorrow, Saturday July 18, at the General John Burrows Historical Society Museum as we gather to honor their memory.

🕊 30th Anniversary Memorial Service
📍 General John Burrows Historical Society Museum
🕑 2:00 p.m.

🏛 Museum Open House
🕛 12:00–4:00 p.m.

Chairs under a tent will be available for the memorial service, but as we are unsure of the size of the crowd, you may wish to bring your own lawn chair to ensure you have a seat.

We are keeping a close eye on the weather and are hoping for clear skies—and perhaps even a rainbow—as we come together to remember and honor the Montoursville 21.

May we never forget.

Julie, Charlene, and Donna partnered with the James V. Brown Library’s Summer Reading Program for Toy Story, where Donna and Charlene shared the history of children’s toys and how they have changed over the years.

After the presentation, each child created their very own whirligig using simple materials that could be found at home—cardboard, yarn, and colored pencils. It was great to see everyone having fun while discovering how children entertained themselves long before electronic toys!

A special thank you to Libby, Julie’s daughter, for cutting out all of the cardboard circles ahead of time and helping the children assemble and use their whirligigs.

Thank you to the James V. Brown Library for inviting us to be part of this year’s Summer Reading Program. Ideas are already floating around for the next program-We always enjoy sharing local history with the next generation!
