🏛️ An Unexpectedly Busy Saturday at the Museum!

Yesterday turned out to be a busy day at the museum—one that wasn’t even planned! 😊

Ray and Julie stopped by to give some neighbors a personal tour and then planned to paint the porch basement door afterward. But before we could get to painting, a few members of the MAHS Class of 1959 arrived for a tour of their own before their reunion at Sammy’s!

We love these unexpected visits and the opportunity to share our local history with others. ❤️

🇺🇸 Join Us for Our November Open House!

Although we’ll be closed the second Sunday in October following our recent Scott Family Cemetery program, we’re already looking ahead to November!

Join us on Sunday, November 8, from 2–4 PM as President Mark Whitmoyer presents a Veterans Day program on the Bikini Atoll Atomic Bomb Testing.

What a wonderful afternoon at today’s program on the Scott Family Cemetery! We were thrilled to have about 90 people in attendance as we learned more about this small cemetery and the Scott family’s connection to the Great Runaway.

A special thank-you to Linda Poulton from the Muncy Historical Society for sharing such an interesting and informative program with us. We appreciate the time and research she put into bringing this history to life.

We also want to thank Herman Logue for sharing the history of the barn since he purchased it ten years ago and for graciously hosting our event. And a huge thank-you to Tammy, who was such a wonderful point of contact and helped us get everything settled in for the afternoon.

During the meeting, our members also reelected four board members: Jason Cott, Philip Oechlar, Rich DeLong, and Mark Whitmoyer. Congratulations and thank you for continuing to serve the General John Burrows Historical Society!

When you arrive you can enter the door on the side under the roof- please do not use the ramp it is incredibly steep.

📜 REMINDER! Our Scott Family Cemetery program is TOMORROW!

Join us Sunday, October 4 at 2:00 PM at Herman and Luther’s for a special look at the small Scott Family Cemetery along Route 87, including its connections to the Great Runaway during the Revolutionary War. Paying members are asked to come at 1:30 to elect the Board of Directors.

We do have a vacancy on our board, so if you are interested in serving and spreading local history, please let us know!

Join us on Sunday, October 4 for our next member program at Herman and Luther’s! We ask that paying members meet at 1:30 to elect our board of directors, the program will start at 2:00. We will meet at the ramp to the barn.

This program will focus on the Scott Family Cemetery, the small historic cemetery located along Route 87. The cemetery has fascinating ties to the Great Runaway during the Revolutionary War, offering a glimpse into an important and turbulent time in our area’s history.

Come learn more about the Scott family and the history of this little cemetery. Please bring a chair so you can sit comfortably and wear good walking shoes as we will walk to the cemetery after the program. Afterwards you can tour the historic barn.

A few weeks ago at our annual picnic, the General John Burrows Historical Society had the privilege of honoring two very special people from Montoursville.

First, we honored the life of Maynard Bogart, an integral part of the GJBHS for many, many years. Maynard served as a board member for numerous years before servings as President from 2008–2022. He dedicated countless hours and Tuesday afternoons for the success of our museum.

So much of what visitors see today exists because of Maynard’s hard work. From helping renovate the museum, setting up displays of artifacts, managing finances, and making sure we are positioned for a strong future, Maynard gave his time, talents, and heart to this organization. We are incredibly grateful for everything he did for the GJBHS.

We were also thrilled to present this year’s GJBHS Annual Scholarship to Emma Hollenbach!

Emma was selected by our Board of Directors as this year’s scholarship recipient for her winning essay on why knowing and preserving Montoursville’s history is important. Her thoughtful words demonstrated a wonderful appreciation for the community and its past.

Emma currently works at The Meadows while taking a gap year to explore her interests, consider her future plans, and prepare for the next chapter of her education and career.

Congratulations, Emma! We are proud to support you as you take this time to discover what comes next. We wish you all the best in your future endeavors!

🇺🇸America 250 Trivia Night Recap! 🇺🇸

What a night! We had about 8 teams join us for a night filled with fun, knowledge, food, and plenty of laughs—and we had an absolute blast!

A special shout-out to our winners:

🥇 Montoursville 4 Life — They absolutely crushed it, including a perfect score in the US Landmarks round! 👏

🥈 Sherlock Homies — A team of five —and half half of them are smart Montoursville Area School District students who definitely showed off their skills! 📚

🥉 The Dynamic Duo — Two smart brains, one impressive score, and a whole lot of laughs all night long! 😂

We have officially discovered that the GJBHS loves hosting trivia at Trifecta! Another game is already being brainstormed…

Now we just have to convince President Mark to let us do it again this year. Apparently, he insists he only hosts two trivia nights a year. We think he may need to reconsider that policy. 😉

Thank you to everyone who came out and made America 250 Trivia such a fun night! Stay tuned… there may be another battle of the brains coming soon!
