The Holiday exhibition this year focuses on the private doll collection of one of our Schuyler County residents.

Over more than 50 years, Sharron Scaptura Holland received a doll for her birthday. Of course, these dolls were 'set dolls,' meant to be handled with care, while sitting carefully on a shelf. However, childhood curiosity, imagination, and a desire to play with all things, meant these dolls received loads of love and special treatment.

Join us this holiday season during our regular hours to enjoy this beautiful collection. The museum is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Thursdays, the museum is open from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. The exhibit will remain open to the public until December 29th 2023. See you at the museum!!

Join us for a special Holiday Open House at the Brick Tavern Museum! Sunday, December 3rd we will have live music, light refreshments, and the drawing for the bourbon cabinet.

We will also have a special reception for "A Collection of Love: the Sharron Scaptura Holland Collection," an exhibition of dolls given as birthday gifts over a 50 year period. Additionally, this reception will showcase the new paper doll cabinet in our Children's Exhibit. The story of these paper dolls is another story of love and ties in beautifully with our holiday exhibit.

There is a little something for everyone! We will see you at the museum!

HISTORY NEVER GETS OLD … RE-TELLING SOME OF SCHUYLER’S STORIES
A permanent exhibit at the Historical Society’s Brick Tavern Museum honors Schuyler County men and women who have served in our nation’s armed forces. Special exhibits focused on World War II in 2020 and the Vietnam War earlier this year. This Nov. 11, 2020, post was part of a series about the World War II exhibit, which featured 70 Schuyler people who served in military or civilian roles. The series began on Oct. 28, 2020, and all the posts and their comments are still viewable on our page.

On this Veterans Day, the Schuyler County Historical Society salutes all who have served in our nation's military forces and all who serve today.

This piece from our current special exhibit about World War II shows that residents at home deeply appreciated and strongly supported their neighbors who were fulfilling duty to their nation far, far away.

HISTORY NEVER GETS OLD … RE-TELLING SOME OF SCHUYLER’S STORIES
How many of you still have a land line? Telephone communication sure has changed over the years! This June 6, 2020, post highlights the last of the telephone operators in Watkins Glen. Click on the date of the original post to see its comments.

The first telephone in Schuyler County was installed in 1882 in the Budd Boot and Shoe Store in Watkins. The number of telephones in public places and then in private homes increased quickly. Telephone companies were established, failed and cropped up again. In 1959, the Burdett Telephone Co. converted to the dial system. Watkins Glen modernized in 1962 and Odessa in 1966. Barbara Bell wrote about the early telephone service in an article in The Journal in October 1997. You can read it here: https://bit.ly/2ABnNlU

This July 1962 photo was taken on the last day of operator telephone service in Watkins Glen. Rotary telephones were in use after then. The operators are identified as, from the left, Domenica (Barber) Davis, Helen (Marcellino) Human, Virginia (Tinker) Sandusky, Darlene (Nye) Morehouse, Margarett Peters, Rose (Ranolia) Palgello and Bea (Degraw) Fazzarry. The notes on the photograph are hand-written and a bit difficult to decipher, so the spelling of the names may be incorrect. If there are errors, please let us know.

We will be at the Craft Fair at the Burdett Fire Hall; Sat. Nov. 4 - 9-2;
Local history books, wreaths, other donated craft items, tickets for the cocktail bar

This is a John Kucko photo of the Erie Canal celebrating the 200th Anniversary of its opening. DYK that our area is part of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor ? It is due to the old Chemung Canal that went from Elmira to Seneca Lake. You can learn more about the Chemung Canal in Gary Emerson's book "A Link in the Great Chain" -- available in our bookstore.
