23 years ago, during the barn tour, the newest building on the Harshbarger Estate was called the Harshbarger Homestead Retreat Center.
This home was built in 1914 by Albert and Carrie (Harshbarger) Livengood. Thomas Livengood, son of Albert and Carrie, dreamed of becoming an architect. Tom sent specifications and drawing to Indiana for the trim and cabinets that were to be built from the walnut trees grown on the farm. The home was built for $6,000, a beautiful country home for that time period. Tom had to give up his dream of becoming an architect because of his family needing him to help with the family farm.
In 1988 Dale & Shirley Harshbarger purchased the home. Son Jeff and wife Grace lived in the house while they renovated the brick home east of the log cabin. This home was advertised as a peaceful sanctuary nestled in the country used for yoga classes and a retreat.
I don’t know who lives there now or what it is used for but hopefully one of our readers will update us.
